Latest COVID Spike Isn't Swamping NYC Hospitals Like Before

But new hospitalizations and deaths so far are averaging well below their spring 2020 peak and even where they were this time last year, during a winter wave that came as vaccinations were just beginning, city data shows.
Mount Sinai Health Systems emergency rooms are seeing about 20% more patients with all conditions in recent days, according to Dr. Eric Legome, who oversees two of the networks seven ERs. But at least so far, were seeing a lot more treat-and-release coronavirus patients than in earlier waves, he said.
Many are looking for tests, help with mild or moderate symptoms, or monoclonal antibody treatment, but very few require oxygen or a hospital stay, said Legome. He runs the ERs at Mount Sinai West and Mount Sinai Morningside.
Hospital admissions and deaths tend to rise and fall weeks after cases do. But Dr. Fritz François, the chief of hospital operations for NYU Langone Health, says so far, were actually seeing something different than in previous surges.

(45,514 posts)so this is a good sign that they're not getting severe illness. Transmissibility is a problem in an area where social distance is very difficult.

(50,993 posts)That's very unusual for her.
BUT she says everyone she knows who did go out last weekend has Covid now.

(42,747 posts)My wife and i together with my cousin and his wife spent hours walking around Columbus Circle, Fifth Avenue, Times Square, the theatre district, Rockefeller Center , the diamond district, Bryant Park, and also went to the Metropolitan Museum. We were all triple vaccinated and we wore masks everywhere we went.
We have all self-tested and are negative for COVID.
Not everyone who was out and about gets it. The key is to be vaccinated and mask up.

(6,477 posts)Of course, all the usual disclaimers about South Africa being a hard comparison case for the US/Europe for a variety of reasons, but still a pretty good sign. Definitely hearing about a lot of people getting COVID lately, including my teenage daughter in my own house and having pretty mild cases, two day colds and done (my daughter didn't even have what you'd consider a head cold - just a runny nose and some sneezing for two days). Happy to see that hold up, esp. if Omicron is actually mild in that way and crowds out other variants.

(27,453 posts)Weve both been vaxxed and boosted. Our other son canceled his familys trip because his daughter is 4 and not vaccinated. We were planning on being all together for the first time in years.
Maybe next year. 😥

(13,498 posts)I love our city but I would consider holding off on visiting unless youre comfortable spending quiet time with family.
1/3 of the plays are shut down bc of COVID, restaurants are closing and reopening left and right, and there are long lines at doctors offices, pharmacies and testing places.
I know a lot of people who have tested positive in the last week here and Weve kind of hunkered down into a mini hibernation at home.
The one thing that is giving me lots of hope is thag there arent constant ambulance sirens like there weee in March of 2020.

(27,453 posts)We were at the airport and it was about an hour before boarding. We received a call from our son and his wife who were in line to get a rapid test. Their best friends had just tested positive. The next hour was stressful as we waited for word. Then we learned the kids were still in school and were not getting tested, so that gave us pause.
It was literally 1 minute left to board when the tests came back negative and we started down the ramp. Halfway down I changed my mind and we walked back to the boarding area. Just too many unknowns with all these breakthrough cases. What if one of the kids was positive? Then what would we do?
This is so unsettling. We are so upset not to be there but there just didnt seem to be any good choices.

(19,204 posts)around 5,000 new cases per day, with a death rate of around 30 per day.
New York State is now averaging over 20,000 New cases per day, and around 60 deaths per day.
The number of new cases each day has quadrupled, but the deaths per day has "only" doubled. I imagine there will be a period of time before the death rate reaches it's peak, but so far anyway the omicron variant doesn't appear as lethal, at least for those who are fully vaccinated.
In another two weeks or so I would expect the deaths per day to reach it's peak, so there isn't anything concrete that can be stated about omicron's lethality yet.
Fingers and toes are crossed that it's lethality isn't as bad for those fully vaccinated. For the fuckwits who are anti-vaxxers........you pays 'yer money and you takes 'yer chances. Assholes.
