Private Emails Reveal Deborah Birx Refused to Participate in Trump Covid Pressers Selling Herd Immun

Immunity: I Just Cant
A newly-released email indicates Dr. Deborah Birx was alarmed by the Donald Trump administrations handling of the coronavirus pandemic, but she still offered to run cover for their policy deliberations.
The House Select Committee released a trove of emails containing insights on how Trump and the CDC were formulating their responses to Covid. This trove included a message from August 2020 ing Birx was responding to an upcoming roundtable of outside medical experts including her old nemesis, Dr. Scott Atlas who were pushing for a herd immunity strategy for the pandemic.
In Trumps prepared remarks for the roundtable, he was primed to urge healthy Americans to come out of lockdown, and he decried unending lockdowns as a non-scientific approach that would inflict grave harm on our children and our entire society. Birx responded by saying she cant be part of this with these people, and she believed their strategy would lead to an unacceptable death toll among minorities and people with co-morbidities. She warned that America wouldve seen twice as many deaths by that point if not for masks and social distancing, but then she offered to go out of town or whatever gives the WH cover for Weds, while she did a separate event with Larry Hogan and Anthony Fauci.
"I cant be part of this with these people who believe in herd immunity and believe we are fine with only protecting the 1.5M Americans in LTCF and not the 80M + with co-morbidities in the populations included the unacceptable death toll among Native Americans, Hispanics and Blacks. With our current mitigation scenario we end up near 300K by Christmas and 500K by the time we have vaccine close to the 600K live lost with 1918 Flu. We have worked to find a path that is the least disruptive to the economy but moves us under R1 and saves both the economy and American lives. Without masks and social distancing in public and homes we end up with twice as many deaths we are a very unhealthy nation with a lot of obesity etc we will never look as good as even Sweden due to our co-morbidities. These are people who believe that all the curves are predetermined and mitigation is irrelevant they are a fringe group without grounding in epidemics, public health or on the ground common sense experience. I am happy to go out of town or whatever gives the WH cover for Weds. Perhaps do Annapolis and meet with Hogan. Fauci and I could probably do it together I am open to options."

(6,017 posts)That was pretty typical of the entire administration. It's actually shocking she didn't have a side grift running.

(7,861 posts)Just a guess but I think when the orange cretin sidelined her in favor of that quack idiot Atlas, Birx's dream of seeing her signature scarves in the shop windows of Trump Tower went bye-bye...I could be wrong

(7,861 posts)a scarved Debbie gushed Trump was "attentive to scientific literature and detail".. and who can forget the infamous Trump presser where he suggested she look into ingesting bleach and injecting disinfectant as a covid cure-all...but did ol' Debs stand up and scream "Are you out of your fucking mind?"..nope..she sat quietly, grimaced and then issued a press release advising against Clorox and Lysol as a covid cure-all..

(796 posts)Deborah Birx is a 'lifelong evangelical'. She has been wishy-washy on a woman's right to abortion, ambiguous on birth-control, and opposed to sex-ed unless provided from a 'religious' perspective.
She has been a mixed up kid since she holds to evangelical notions and bowing to authority and yet wants to accept science and statistical facts, too. Incompatible ideas lead to cognitive dissonance and inconsistent behavior. She rejects Darwin and evolution and believes Noah's flood was real.
Overall, I rank her as having done more harm than good. She is certainly no champion of women's health and sexual well-being. Nor of teenagers'.

(4,616 posts)In the long line of people who jumped on the Trump train (only the best people , and are now desperately trying to salvage the credibility they once had or are in hiding saying nothing. Anyone hear from Rex Tillerson lately? Or Tom Bossert, Richard Spencer, Jeff Sessions, John Kelley, John Bolton, Sean Spicer, Reince Priebus? Hell, we don't even hear much from "I wear the same three dresses ALL the time" Sarah Huckabee and Kelly Ann is still out there but now lurking in the shadows.

(15,224 posts)By choosing to remain silent, she violated the Hippocratic oath. She allowed people to die without speaking up.

(16 posts)If not worse than the others, because she certainly knew better yet stayed silent. Her grandchildren will be taught in history classes that their grandmother was an active part of the political cabal that allowed hundreds of thousands of deaths to preserve their power. What a proud legacy for her.
