The move comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a probe into the Passenger Play feature this week.

SAN FRANCISCO Tesla will no longer allow drivers and front-seat passengers to play video games while its cars are in motion, the company told federal regulators after a probe was opened this week.
Tesla informed the agency that it is changing the functionality of this feature, Lucia Sanchez, a spokeswoman for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said. In a new software update, Passenger Play will now be locked and unusable when the vehicle is in motion.

Sanchez said Teslas move followed the opening of a preliminary evaluation into the feature on Tuesday, which allowed drivers and passengers to play solitaire and more advanced games while the car was moving by simply agreeing to a prompt that the software was for passenger use.
The Vehicle Safety Act prohibits manufacturers from selling vehicles with defects posing unreasonable risks to safety, including technologies that distract drivers from driving safely, Sanchez said.

(17,316 posts)Big screen video games while driving is a recipe for wreaks, veering off the road, and getting people killed.
Cell phones are already doing a good job of that.

(34,119 posts)why anyone would even consider doing that. I had the option but did not turn it on. I don't want to read anything other than what I have to to drive. Can't all those things wait? I do use the phone if it is a safe time to do so but I do not have to take my hands off the wheel to do it and do not hold conversations. How on earth does anyone think they are capable of that? We really are a dumb lot aren't we?

Shouldn't be too hard from there to work out protocols for passengers or airplanes and whatnot.

(26,319 posts)Of course they still have a long way to go before that happens as there are a number of obstacles including guaranteeing a method that prevents anyone from doing something like crashing a semi truck carrying a load of chloriine into a grade school.

(1,568 posts)I think it's more around the 50k area. Although, I think there are often times some extra expenses to get a usable charging system installed and stuff. At least if you want to be able to charge it quickly.

(5,857 posts)runs in that neighborhood. It isn't currently manufactured but you can put down a 50K deposit on an expected 200k vehicle now. The prior version of the Roadster was what was shot into orbit a few years ago, and I could see that going for 150k.

(1,568 posts)That's the price of a decent house in some parts of the country. I'm guessing they are targeting the Lamborghini crowd, aye? It's the model 3 that is somewhat more reasonable, right?

(1,568 posts)I get why some manchild would suggest it. It sounds like something I would stupidly suggest, but the fact it wasn't shot down almost immediately boggles my mind.
