State sues Virginia town over 'discriminatory' police practices

Source: Washington Post

Virginia’s attorney general filed a lawsuit Thursday seeking a court-ordered monitor for the police force in the small town of Windsor, in the Hampton Roads area, where a Black military officer was subjected to a violent traffic stop that sparked outrage after video of the incident became public last spring.

The lawsuit follows a months-long inquiry in which Attorney General Mark R. Herring (D) said his office found a pattern of discriminatory behavior by Windsor police, including excessive traffic stops of African Americans, in violation of the Virginia Human Rights Act and the Virginia Public Integrity and Law Enforcement Misconduct Act.

The legal action, filed in state court, comes a year after Army Lt. Caron Nazario, wearing his military fatigues, was held at gunpoint, struck, pepper-sprayed and handcuffed by Windsor police after they stopped him on Dec. 5, 2020, because his newly purchased SUV lacked permanent license plates. He said a temporary tag was taped to a window.

When Nazario told officers that he was “honestly afraid to get out” of his SUV, one of them replied, “Yeah, you should be!”

Windsor Police probably don't hold a candle to Aurora Colorado's Police.......Aurora's City Council has paid out tens of millions of dollars for their police dept's racist actions just this year.........In addition to that, Aurora if I'm not mistaken, just paid out 26 Million for the actions of three Aurora policemen and two Aurora Fire Paramedics who basically Euthanized a young black man who had done nothing wrong and was not resisting them.....The five of them agreed to give him Ketamine to "settle him down"......... Their use of that particular drug was highly questionable and the 2X dose was an OD and resulted in the young man's death.......

You would think that the City government would get tired of paying these lawsuits because of their Police Departments actions.....
There are several other cities here in Colorado that have also been paying out huge settlements for their police's barbaric actions, not just Aurora.

When will this police BS end, most particularly the Racist stuff????????????

Yes, federal funding should be eliminated for Windsor police and city government, but that will take some time.

The entire town should be immediately declared off limits for all military personnel. No soldier, sailor or air personnel should be allowed to spend money at that gas station. Or at the pizza parlor down the street. Or go to any church within the city limits. Or, or… Hit them where it hurts, and immediately.

It was a man and he was mental and out of his mind, probably meth. Strong enough to hurt himself and others.
Those medics were certainly as guilty as anyone if they over dosed the young man. There should be jail time for them.

The soldier did nothing wrong. No charges were filed.
Our fascist police need to be forced to understand that if no crime has been committed they have NO AUTHORITY over America citizens. NONE you can't tell us to do shit until we break the law.
Just for the record Black veterans were lynched after WWII. Nothing changes.
Army Lt. Caron Nazario is lucky to be alive. Get those cops in a cell, NOW.

And in the article, "discriminatory behavior." FFS, just call a spade a spade and say the police department has a long history of discrimination.

The Police were violating the law and acting as criminals here. They should be charged as such when they are violating the law.

And eliminate that Civil Asset Forfeiture while they are at it. Taking peoples money without proving a crime is more unconstitutional BS.

The incoming Attorney General is reportedly very cop friendly...so it's a good bet that he'll drop the lawsuit!!!

...it would be cool for Gov. Northam to declare martial law within the town of Windsor and direct the Virginia Militia to take over police activity there and to relieve all police officers and arrest any remaining police officers with any active complaints against them and lock them in the brig.

On January 15, Virginia will inaugurate a new Gov, Lt Gov, and Attorney General -- all Trump-loving rightwingers.

Jason Miyares -- the incoming AG who is a part-time attorney -- no doubt will kill the suit, maybe on his first day in office.
