2 more earthquakes shake South Carolina's Midlands region

ELGIN, S.C. (AP) Two more earthquakes have struck near Columbia, South Carolina, where seven quakes have been felt since Monday.
The most recent earthquakes struck Tuesday in the Elgin area, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northeast of Columbia, WLTX-TV reported. One of those was a 2.5 magnitude earthquake and the other a 2.36 magnitude quake.
The state typically averages up to 20 quakes each year, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division said.
Elgin is along a large fault system that extends from Georgia through the Carolinas and into Virginia, said Steven Jaume, a professor in the geology department at the College of Charleston.

(86,638 posts)I can imagine that magnitude could be significant in certain strata but where I am, you can't really feel them if they are under 3.0M.

Are you in the deep freeze? we're hanging around 0 with lots of big wind and enough snow to make a mess, nothing more. Well, I really can't say about snow amount since it could be a lot more, it's just drifted around stationary objects. It has been snowing the better part of the last three days, it's just that the wind has been a constant 35+ mph with severe gusts that make me run to the window to see any shingles from my roof are sailing away across the street.
I'm not planning on leaving the house until next week so I guess it doesn't matter much unless the power goes out.

(23,319 posts)I live near the mouth of Hellgate canyon and the wind is absolutely howling. It makes potty training an 8 week old puppy just that much more challenging. Im not going anywhere until work on Monday. Glad youre staying put too. No reason to be out unless you have to be.

(86,638 posts)It does make it a challenge, who would want to go out in that to do their business?
I am very thankful that I have warm shelter and even a visiting feline friend for a week or two while his human finally gets moved in to her newly built house. We've had some interesting talks about her discoveries during homelessness. She didn't have it seriously bad, had friends who helped keep the horses and she had an RV and house-sat for the last two months but still... it was hard for her.
Have a great night, catch you next year if not sooner!
I am going to pop in and out of DU while working a jigsaw puzzle and streaming something online, don't know what yet.

(8,311 posts)A verified quake hit, either a 3 or just below it, very close. Low enough that it coulda been a quarry blast, and that's what I thought it was.
This was on the top of a ridge in the Ozarks -- the house was a hippie shack, where I was -- the house shook, but nothing shook off walls, but w/o the sound that would go w/ a sonic boom. Another person was 20 feet away from the house on good topsoil between him and the bedrock, saw/felt/heard absolutely nothing.
However, the person unlucky enough to be standing on part of the bare bedrock surrounding the garden area was knocked down -- she was the one who was sure it was a quake, too, not just a nearby blast or sonic boom. She was unhurt, just got *extra* dirty in the garden that day vs her usual amount.
