Liz Cheney on Trump: He's a threat to American democracy
Source: Politico
He crossed lines no American president has ever crossed before, the Wyoming Republican told host George Stephanopoulos on ABCs This Week, days before the anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
You know, we entrust the survival of our republic into the hands of the chief executive, and when a president refuses to tell the mob to stop, when he refuses to defend any of the coordinate branches of government, he cannot be trusted.
Cheney is one of nine House members serving on the committee chaired by Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) investigating the Capitol riot, including Trumps role in it.

(6,265 posts)was as obvious a warning as could be possible. Will intelligence and the will to continue our experiment in democracy continue? I do really wonder.

(922 posts)TFG being the exception. It makes you blind to the good that they are capable of.
My hatred of Nixon blinded me to the good programs he started. The EPA for example. That doesn't make up for the damage he and Kissinger did do.
You need to be open to their potential for doing good but watchful and ready to oppose the bad.

(16,733 posts)but Agnew resigned and Nixon resigned. Don the Con is a mob boss, and needs to be treated accordingly. Liz is on the right track.

(70,504 posts)Said Cheney: That fucking guy Jim Jordan. That son of a bitch. While these maniacs are going through the place, Im standing in the aisle and he said, We need to get the ladies away from the aisle. Let me help you. I smacked his hand away and told him, Get away from me. You fucking did this.'

(16,984 posts)...blaming them for the attack, but I hadn't realized Liz Cheney had not only blamed another member of the GOP but had done so with colorful language. And if she slapped away Jim Jordan's hand, she showed more restraint than I might have.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are public hearings very shortly.

(34,452 posts)TFGs dereliction of duty (some of it) was not clearly in violation of a statute, because nothing like this had happened before. This is important because some Rethugs are trying to argue that the committee is illegitimate because it has no legislative purpose.

She will come out of this far better off in standing than most members of her party. Most of them are greasy weasels like Gym Jordan.

(9,670 posts)American first, Republican second. There may be others in the GOP that are privately so, but they are cowards among cowards for failing to raise their voices when democracy weighs in the balance.

(9,670 posts)Is a sin that should end in the death of the Republican Party.
America's thrives on having its "conversations" and the prevailing party institutes what the majority of us want.
The GOP has severed that communication, instituting two Americas, one of which is flagrantly imaginary. They not only want us to be silenced, they wish this death sentence to be permanent.
If that isn't subversive and un-American, what is?
Pence's punishment will be an eternity of being deemed an ineffective politician and a coward of a man.

(2,355 posts)I can at least respect her. Both Cheney and Rep. Adam Kinzinger. Why? Because the two of them have stood up for American democracy without fail, and taken the abuse heaped on them by their "so-called" (R-) colleagues. So, yeah, I can respect them, even as I disagree with them.
Not a single other person in either house of Congress with an (R-) behind his or her name has done shit to deserve that respect...not even those who voted to convict tRump in the second impeachment trial. Why? Because they've been silent on everything since, when events have demanded that they speak out.

(394 posts)She's just proving what others have learned; never cross a Cheney. McCarthy is so dumb he doesn't realize he's a deadman walking, yes she wants to stop Trump and save democracy but while doing so she's going after her other goal which is to relegate McCarthy to the dustbin of history. It's really a beautiful thing to watch.

So should any R who's not a RWNJ. But they won't. So, not serious enough about saving our democracy.

(16 posts)I disagree with virtually every policy position espoused by Liz Cheney - but I have immense respect for her as a person and for being one of the almost-nonexistent group of Republicans willing to stand up to the cult leader. If we're ever to have a functioning, rational two-party system we need a lot more strong women like her on the GOP side.
