Lani Guinier, Voting and Civil Rights Theorist and Legal Scholar, Dies at 71

She was the first Black woman to be given tenure at Harvard Law School, but faced attacks from conservatives later in her career.

Lani Guinier, the first Black woman to earn tenure at Harvard Law School has died at age 71. The New York Times reports that a cousin of the legal scholar, Sherrie Russell-Brown, confirmed Guinier’s death and provided no further details regarding a cause of death. School officials said she was surrounded by family at the time of her passing.

A champion for voting rights, and a civil rights theorist, Guinier came to national prominence in 1993, when then-President Bill Clinton, a Yale Law School classmate of Guinier’s, nominated her to be assistant attorney general for civil rights. Guinier was attacked by conservatives in the media and Senate Republicans over her writing on voting and civil rights, causing Clinton to eventually withdraw her nomination without a confirmation hearing.

She served as a special assistant in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division during the Carter administration, and worked for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, where she headed the voting rights project.

One of her legal arguments was that the concept of “one person, one vote” was insufficient in a system where the interests of minorities, racial, religious or otherwise, were inevitably trampled by those of the majority.

That Repugs hated her with a passion was par for the course.

But it was the media's relentless assaults on her as an extremist - including using her hairdo to portray her as Mickey Mouse - that really sank her nomination.

Repugs, meanwhile, can put in all the 3rd world style ethnic cleansers in the Justice Dept. and the judiciary they want - including some without even a law degree.

Godspeed to her.

In the face of the negative media attention, many Democratic senators, including David Pryor of Arkansas, Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts, and Carol Moseley-Braun of Illinois (the only African American serving in the Senate at that time) informed Clinton that her interviews with senators were going poorly and urged him to withdraw Guinier's nomination. -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lani_Guinier

Left her hanging out to dry, because they folded to the right-winged media, right-winged smear machine and to GQP Senators who were determined to make Lani's life a living hell by calling her a radical, Commie, Marxist, Quota Queen and I'm sure worse behind her back. To my knowledge, Lani never did say anything that I ever heard of where she expressed anger at the Clinton's. To have showed up at her wedding, then to have left her high and dry like they did

Yet we have a lying, sexually harassing, self-hating, racist against blacks, Clarence Thomas on the Court, a sexually assaulting/lying/I like Beer guzzling, gambling right-winged troll in Kavannaugh there too, and don't get me started on that right-winged, Hand maiden's Tale, step-ford wife Amy "Loony" Barrett up there too licking her chops so she can make sure women cannot have a safe and legal abortion even in cases of rape. She also probably doesn't give a damn if a young girl is the victim of incest whose impregnated with her father's, male cousin's, brother's or uncle's baby. MOST right-wingers are SO pro-birth and pro-fetus until that fetus grown up and into being a living/breathing child who may at a point in their life need help, and if that's the case, they give the child a middle-finger. Must be nice for right-wined males to be able to make sure the women in their lives--be it a mistress, side-piece, daughter and wife Bill Barr, GA. to name one) CAN have a safe, mostly stress-free abortion WHENEVER and WHEREVER they want one. Easy, peasy lemon-squeezy

ford, Hillary, and many other women who stuck their necks out. and then the other couple hundred misogynist racism blowhards parroting him on 1500 radio stations did the same. Dem leaders and orgs continue to ignore it
