'Numerous fatalities' expected from NYC's worst fire disaster in 30+ years

Source: WNBC-TV

New York City officials are calling the fire at a 19-story apartment building in the Bronx one of the city's worst in over 30 years.

The FDNY commissioner said he expects "numerous fatalities" after identifying at least 63 people with varying levels of injuries from smoke and fire. At least 32 people were taken to hospitals in the borough with life-threatening injuries.

The overwhelming majority of the fire's victims are suffering from severe smoke inhalation, FDNY Commissioner Dan Nigro said. Firefighters rushing into the building discovered victims on all nearly every floor of the building.

"There were certainly people trapped in their apartments all through this building," Nigro said, calling the smoke conditions "unprecedented."

About a gazillion years ago. And, being a kid, I never once thought about the risk and threat of fire. Strange. It’s got to be terrifying to be in a 19- story building on fire.

Somehow i doubt it had many of the current safety features we would expect a high-rise to have.

This is a horrific event and these people will be in our thoughts, especially considering winter weather makes it much worse. As a former volunteer firefighter, I especially worry for the affected children and FDNY.

But it's doubtful that any fire event will ever surpass 9/11 and hopefully not for the entire nation.

Causing it to spread.

If there's a fire, shut the damn doors, people.
