Dwayne Hickman, Star of 'The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis,' Dies at 87

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Before he played the lovestruck high schooler on the 1960s CBS sitcom, the perpetual teenager starred on 'The Bob Cummings Show.'

BY DUANE BYRGE, MIKE BARNES

Dwayne Hickman, who starred as the hopelessly in love high school kid on the popular CBS comedy series The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, has died. He was 87.

Hickman, who also starred as a crazy teenager on The Bob Cummings Show, died Sunday morning at his Los Angeles home of complications from Parkinson’s disease, publicist Harlan Boll announced.

Dobie Gillis, which ran for 147 episodes from 1959-63, starred the fresh-faced, crew-cut Hickman (25 years old when the series began) as a student always looking to date the most beautiful, unattainable girls. Future Gilligan’s Island star Bob Denver played his pal, beatnik Maynard G. Krebs.

Dobie’s quest for love often was capsized by his grocer father (played by Frank Faylen) or something goofy that Maynard had done.

"Hallelujah, brothers! I have come to comfort the sick and heal the sinner! Let them what's troubled, let them what's vexed o' mind come unto me! They's plenty o' good things o' comfort in the Bible, brothers!" (Hiccups, produces flask or pistol from hollowed-out Bible.)
I worked as a theater usher during this film's run. God knows how many times I watched it.

One of the local OTA channels has this show on really late at night/early morning and I've watched it a few times. I
was confused by his hair going from really blond to dark. It's a pretty smart show and I recognized
the actress playing his mother as Mrs. Bakerman (always knitting) from "The Bob Newhart Show".

I had the good fortune to stage manage with Sheila Kuehl, who payed Zelda, a few years ago. I almost never asked to take a photo with a celebrity, but I couldn't help myself in this case. Kuehl is an L.A. County Supervisor.

Sheila Kuehl has served the people of California in many offices--

Serving as the member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for the 3rd District. Kuehl was California's first openly gay state legislator, having previously served in the California State Senate and the California State Assembly, where she was the Assembly's first female Speaker pro tempore. (from her Wikipedia)

Any time she's on the radio I stop to listen because she's so knowledgeable on so many topics important to SoCal.
