Clyburn knocks Manchin for arguing voting rights vote must be bipartisan

Source: The Hill

House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) lambasted Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) on Sunday for saying a vote on changing voting rights laws must be bipartisan.

Last week, Manchin delivered a blow to Democratic hopes of advancing voting rights legislation, telling CNN that any rule changes made to advance voting rights bills should be made on a bipartisan basis.

Appearing on "Fox News Sunday," Clyburn told Fox News anchor Bret Baier that's Manchin's suggestion of requiring bipartisan support for voting tights caused him "pain."

"I am, as you know, a Black person, descended of people who were given the vote by the 15th Amendment to the United States Constitution. The 15th Amendment was not a bipartisan vote. It was a single-party vote that gave Black people the right to vote," Clyburn told Baier.

We would already have truly open, honest, and fair elections where everyone who was eligible to vote had both the opportunity to vote, and to have their vote counted.

But if we had that then Rethugs would have to explain to the voters why their policies are better, and since they have no policies other than to oppose everything Democrats propose, they couldn't do it.

They’re 100% not going to vote to change the filibuster rules.

Susan Collins and other Repubs are openly trying to pass the Electoral College Certification law, that would prevent states from certifying a candidate that lost the popular vote in that state.

Has anyone asked the 50 supporters of sedition why they can’t be supporters of democracy…oh…guess I answered that already.

Focus on the democracy haters who snubbed the anniversary of a coup and now refuse to do anything to fix anything similar happening again by plugging the holes. Why do Republican want the holes open??

The mass media is controlling the message and it’s the wrong message and the message is to focus on…Manchin. Focus on the 50.

Biden just lately delivered a major speech with the correct focus, didn’t he?

Manchin is something else, isn’t he. My guess is, he just loves parading his power with his vote being the swing vote instead of Kamala typically being the swing vote with a 50/50 senate. Must really love that power. You’d think maybe his kids or someone could say, what are you doing.

I will not debate with you the reason for doing the right thing. You know what that is. I will not state the obvious that a major factor in not getting voting rights legislation passed in the Senate is that not one single Republican Senator is willing to do the right thing and support this critical legislation. We all know that too.
What I will say is that if voting legislation is not passed you will be the one owning that failure. Your name and picture will be all that is seen and heard. You will never escape that Albatross hanging around you neck. No money, yachts or cars will erase that stench. And if democracy in these Unites States does indeed die as a result, your hand will be the one shown driving the knife into this Republic's heart.
You think about that while lounging on your yacht, sipping your Bourbon and smoking your cigar.

In Waukon, Iowa, Sen. Grassley tells constituents he’s confident Sen. Manchin will hold out against supporting Dems’ sweeping ethics/voting rights reform

“We think we’ve got him nailed down”

He was right then so what makes you think anything is different now? Manchin is the fly in the ointment. He always has been he always will be, and I'm starting to think he was purposely put there for just this occasion. It's time to start rallying the troops and sing the GOTV mantra because time is running out. It may not be enough to overcome all the obstacles but we gotta try. Feels like everything but time is moving in slow motion.
