Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announces positive Covid test

Source: The Guardian

The Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has tested positive for Covid-19.

In a statement on Sunday evening, the office of the New York progressive said she was “experiencing symptoms and recovering at home.

“The congresswoman received her booster shot this fall and encourages everyone to get their booster and follow all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance”.

New York is experiencing a huge surge of Covid cases linked to the Omicron variant, placing strain on hospitals and public health resources.

Even I somehow managed to get it despite being pretty damn cautious. The fact that it’s pretty mild for the majority of vaccinated and fewer people are wearing mask, it’s not surprising that so many people are getting it. I thought I just had a cold. If it wasn’t for the really bad sore throat I had for a couple days, I probably wouldn’t have got tested.

Didn't hear anything about her
contracting Covid before now.

Anyway, everyone else showed
up and it looks like the constituents are in good hands.

She still represents part of the
bronx, a statement showing
support would still go a long way.

IOW: the brief video clips that are making the rounds of RW media show her in a venue that is, by any definition you might want to choose, as we say in English: outdoors.

for significant numbers of infected people, she was taking an unnecessary risk, and like what happened outside at the WH with trump, it is prone to a superspreader event.

That's the only consistency here: attack the Dems.

They do attack anyone for wearing a mask outside and now that AOC was not wearing a mask outside, they're claiming she got covid. So to try to straighten out the consistency, ask them, "should people wear masks outside or not?"

is not a good example, and those type of gatherings is against CDC guidelines

and while it is good she is triple vaxed, that does not mean she may not have transmitted the infection to an unknown number of people

She did not set a good example

Hopefully she will recover quickly

The four vaxxed and boosted (including me) family members just got over very mild cases of Covid.

My brother in law can barely get out of bed not only with Covid, but also with grief because his wife in intubated with Covid pneumonia. It’s not looking good.

His sons still refuse to get vaccinated

29. Let's not repeat right-wing talking points
Mon Jan 10, 2022, 09:26 AM
Jan 2022

Some things of note about the right-wing criticisms of AOC...

1. They don't mention she was outside. They say things like she was "at" a bar to make people think she was inside. Then, they try to claim hypocrisy regarding NY/NYC policies, but those policies largely apply inside, not outside. An outside tent structure with no walls but a roof does not require masks.
2. They claim she was in "large" and/or "packed" crowds, but if you look at actual photos and videos, it isn't "large." For example, the brunch outside may have had 100 people. She was not up dancing bouncing into 100 other people. While 100 isn't large, she wasn't packed into 100 people. She was sitting down at a table at the edge of the perimeter with no walls, and it had good ventilation. While there were some smaller sub-crowds, like one with 20 or so packed people, not sure what they were doing, she did not get in there.
3. They are saying she had prolonged contact with people, like giving long hugs. She hugged the person for just a few seconds while they were both outside.

Let's not repeat exaggerations from the right wing.

Next, think about the ramifications of what the right wing is doing here. Look at a bigger picture and examine past claims and apply their claims in total to policy.
A. Conservatives have been screaming that masks are ineffective. Those that haven't said that are making fun of anyone who wears a mask outside. So, ask them--because now they are implying without realizing it that if you don't wear a mask outside and social distance you will get covid. Ask them, "so you think she should have worn a mask outside?"
B. Republicans were poking fun of AOC for vacationing in Florida, saying now she is in the Free State of Florida. So, apparently, Florida's policies are inadequate to stop the spread of covid.

Lastly, we don't even know that she got covid from this outside event. The CDC says symptoms can appear anywhere from 2-14 days after exposure. The probability seems to indicate she likely got it some time in Florida, but perhaps not, and perhaps not from this event. But again, if it WAS from the event, then what does it say about covid policy to wear masks INSIDE buildings if people can get it OUTSIDE?

With Omicron, it is basically a cold. No one should feel ashamed or embarrassed for getting it, nor should be we worried about locking ourselves down to the point where we can't have a meal without a mask on like many Republicans want to shame AOC for.

It's time to move on.
