Trump dogs "dull" DeSantis ahead of potential 2024 matchup
Source: Axios
Why it matters: The two are among the most popular Republicans in the country, and as the former president eyes another run in 2024, he's irked by DeSantis' popularity and refusal to rule out running against him.
* DeSantis is a favorite of Republican voters when pollsters remove Trump from the hypothetical 2024 field.
* The governor also hasn't been beyond tweaking his fellow Floridian.
* DeSantis said on the "Ruthless" podcast, recorded Thursday, one of his biggest regrets in office was not speaking out "much louder" in March 2020, when Trump advised the American public to stay home to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Behind the scenes: "In the context of the 2024 election, he usually gives DeSantis a pop in the nose in the middle of that type of conversation," said a source who recently spoke to Trump about DeSantis.
* The source, who shared the private remarks on the condition of anonymity, has heard Trump criticize DeSantis on multiple occasions.
* The source said Trump makes a point of saying he isn't worried about the Florida governor as a potential 2024 rival.
* "He says DeSantis has no personal charisma and has a dull personality," the source added.
* A spokesman for Trump did not comment when presented with this reporting.

DeSantis knows what happened when the pool of 2016 Republican candidates didn't take Trump on directly. He may feel strong enough to do so going in to 2024.

(16,860 posts)not to mention possible indictments in NY and Georgia. I'm not so sure about DeSantis's popularity in the 2024 GOP primaries, however. 2 years is a long time in American politics, and any talk about frontrunner status at this stage is extremely premature.

That's what he does! He always does that to his opponents. Remember what he was like in the 2016 primaries? His behavior was appalling except to his worshippers.
He didn't feel the need to go after any of his fellow Republicans that way in 2020, because he wasn't competing against any of them for the party's nomination. If he's not in jail or dead by 2024, though, it'll be like 2016 redux.

(6,117 posts)I enjoy watching their circling firing squad. I just hope it translates into splitting up the gop into 3 factions: trump's loyalists. Desantis loyalists and those who are loyal to the constitution and this country.
The GOP faction "loyal to the constitution and this country" could meet in a phone booth with room left over for Clark Kent to change clothes.
Yes. There's a few that still believe in the rule of law. But they're getting shown the door pretty quickly.
I guess we're old folks, I remember phone booths. I also remember the scene in Christopher Reeve's superman where he went to change and only found an upright phone kiosk. We don't even have those anymore!!

(36,949 posts)If Trump actually got the nomination, DeSantis would kiss his ass like Rafael Cruz did, even after Trump calling his wife ugly.

He certainly is just as big of an asshole.
If those 2 go up against each other, it can only be good for Democrats. I will stock up on popcorn...

(47,625 posts)And Trump is right about one thing, DeSantis is very dull. I don't understand how he got this far, other than his shameless genuflecting to Donald Trump. At least Trump has a personality, albeit a horrible one, but you could never call him dull.
