House passes bill to invest in manufacturing and research and counter China's influence

Source: CNN

The House of Representatives voted Friday to make sweeping investments in American manufacturing and scientific research as well as changes to trade policy in an effort to make the US more competitive on the global stage and counter China's growing economic influence.

Congressional Democrats are searching for a win as key elements of President Joe Biden's domestic agenda remain stalled, most prominently sweeping legislation to expand the social safety net known as the Build Back Better Act.

Passage of the China competition bill will give the party an opportunity to tout a legislative victory and demonstrate responsiveness to major economic concerns, like supply chain disruptions, in the spotlight amid the pandemic. And it gives Democrats a chance to argue their assertiveness against a major superpower whose economic influence is on the rise at a key moment with China hosting the Olympic Games in Beijing.

The legislation put forward by House Democrats -- called the America COMPETES Act of 2022 -- addresses pressing economic issues facing the Biden administration, including supply chain disruptions and a global shortage of semiconductor chips, which are essential for the production of smartphones, medical equipment and cars. Additionally, the bill calls for a number of changes to US trade rules, aiming to level the playing field for American businesses and combat China's market-distorting trade practices.

And provide incentives to get as much of those industries, products and materials produced in the United States as possible.

Every piece of legislation that has popular support that passes the house should be taken to the floor for a vote.

Then MAKE THEM STAND BY THEIR RECORD

At least then we can let voters know that the Rethugs voted against

-- lowering Medicare age
-- paid family leave
-- penalizing China and helping American manufacturing
-- the list goes on and on

The hardcore racists will still all vote Rethug -- but will independent voters look at everything that the rethugs voted against on the record and still vote for them?

I doubt it. I really do not care if a single bill passes as long as you force the rethugs and Manchin and Sinema to stand by their record. Let them wear the albatross rather than hide behind the "I never voted against it -- it never came to the floor" defense

How do they stop that research from benefiting the Chinese companies after the taxpayer has done all the legwork?

decide to offshore jobs that used to be done by people inside the US. Not to mention ones that keep money outside the country and or transfer their HQs out of the US.

As much as Americans innovate, the Chinese will continue stealing our innovations. Their goal is to replace the US as a superpower and they are well on the road in that direction.
