GOP lawmaker aims to strip state funding from school districts that defied Gov. DeSantis on masks
Source: Sarasota Herald-Tribune
'Its about holding people accountable,' the lawmaker behind the move said
TALLAHASSEE The Florida House would strip $200 million from a dozen counties where school boards defied Gov. Ron DeSantis by requiring students and staff to wear masks another punishing strike in a clash that consumed much of last fall.
The move came from state Rep. Randy Fine, R-Palm Bay, the House education budget-writer.
Fine played a central role in promoting claims last fall by parents of a Brevard County student with Down Syndrome who said their child was abused by teachers when a mask was tied to her face.
The claim coursed through conservative media, was seized on by a DeSantis spokeswoman, and the girls father repeated the story on Fox News Tucker Carlson Show. Law enforcement investigators later dismissed the case concluding it was built around staged photos and false statements.

Only a few dozen people are deciding to ignore the guv's EO.
If the EO is legitimate law, arrest them.
They are punishing thousands of people for the actions of a few.

ancianita
(36,132 posts)Federal doesn't amount to more than 10-16% of school funds, most of it coming out of the IDEA public law since 1990, back when Repubs actually wrote and passed legislation.
Understand that the US Constitution has no provisions for education. It is not a fundamental right. The founders left "education" up to the states. The South never even had public education until the Reconstruction, when Black lawmakers had it passed into law and into state constitutions.

(19,204 posts)Typical autocratic behavior. Punish your "enemies" if they don't obey.
It's only a short step from there to jailing or killing your perceived "enemies".
They see this as a winning strategy in what remains of our democracy.

Accountable, eh? What a joke the Florida rethugs are! What consequences is that guy going to suffer for promoting fake pictures and creating the dangerous environment that exist in public schools these days?
