Sandy Hook families settle with Remington marking 1st time gun maker is held liable for mass shootin

Source: ABC

Remington Arms agreed Tuesday to settle liability claims from the families of five adults and four children killed in the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, according to a new court filing, marking the first time a gun manufacturer has been held liable for a mass shooting in the U.S.

The settlement comes nearly eight years after the families sued the maker of the Bushmaster XM15-E2S semiautomatic rifle that was used in the 2012 mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

"The plaintiffs in this action hereby give Notice that a settlement agreement has been executed between the parties," the filing said.

More details are expected to be announced at a news conference from the families. /snip

A relatively quick "legal stuff for reporters" course should be mandatory for reporters who want to report on legal stuff.

They probably settled for fear of a verdict.

Remington, which filed for bankruptcy protection in July 2020, had argued all of the plaintiffs’ legal theories were barred under Connecticut law and by a federal statute -- the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act -- which, with limited exceptions, immunizes firearms manufacturers, distributors and dealers from civil liability for crimes committed by third parties using their weapons.

Hey, righties--this was not a staged event with kid crisis actors! No way would Remington Arms settle a suit from the families of the victims if it was not real.
It happened.
The most disturbing, horrific mass shooting of little children at school happened.

There effectively is no "Remington Arms". The company went bankrupt years ago, and the insurers are probably just paying out the remaining coverage limit.

"...if it was not real. It happened."

No one in the suit disputed that. You must be thinking of the Alex Jones lawsuit, which doesn't have anything to do with this one.

However I'm so glad the families are getting something.

But much work still needs to be done to stop the sales of these deadly weapons to the public at large.

Guns kill People.
Yes they do.
It's a fact - that is what these type weapons are designed to do.
No word games here.
