Mexico City: Mexican authorities say they intercepted more than 1000 migrants in 24 hours on Friday (AEDT) as the government tried to curb the entry of undocumented travellers seeking to make their way to the United States.
The National Migration Institute (INM) said the migrants were located in operations carried out in 22 states of the country, with about 10 per cent of them minors and many of them travelling alone.
The institute took into custody 1266 migrants from different continents that were transiting irregularly, the INM said in a statement.
Some migrants arrived from countries such as Afghanistan, Armenia, Canada, China, Ethiopia, Ghana, Italy, Pakistan, Somalia, Russia, Switzerland and Turkey. Mexican authorities identified 33 nationalities among the migrants intercepted.

(10,078 posts)I think it was yesterday there was a post about housing migrants in a private prison. Many migrants are turned away, yet still they come. While I support immigration, the legal system is broken because Trump stopped processing applications and created something like a 10-year backlog. The Afghans who needed to be rescued got caught in that situation because Trump stopped allowing their papers to be processed.
So now both legal and illegal immigration are a mess, and this mess hurts Democrats far more than Republicans. In 2020, largely Hispanic border counties in Texas voted for Trump, even counties that had voted for Democrats in the past. A US rep recently changed his party from Democrat to Republican because he saw the handwriting on the wall. Many of these counties in Texas are populated by both leal and some illegal immigrants, but most of them were born in the US and indeed many of their ancestors lived there when Texas was part of Mexico. The flood of migrants into their communities has been disruptive, and many approved of Trumps border wall.
Latinos are not just one big voting bloc, and Democrats need to do a better job of finding out what they want from politicians or Republicans will use their social conservatism to woo them to the red team.
