Live updates: Russia vetoes UN resolution to halt attack

Source: Associated Press

UNITED NATIONS—Russia has vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution demanding that Moscow stop its attack on Ukraine and withdraw all troops.

Friday’s vote was 11-1, with China, India and the United Arab Emirates abstaining. It showed significant but not total opposition to Russia’s invasion of its smaller, militarily weaker neighbor.

The United States and other supporters knew the resolution wouldn’t pass but argued it would highlight Russia’s international isolation. The resolution’s failure paves the way for backers to call for a swift vote on a similar measure in the U.N. General Assembly. There are no vetoes in the 193-member assembly. There’s no timetable as yet for a potential Assembly vote.

"...permanent member can be removed, or a new permanent member added to the Security Council only through an amendment of the UN Charter.

Chapter 18 of the UN Charter lays down the procedure for its amendment. It requires consent and ratification of two-thirds of the 193-member General Assembly. It must also have approval of all the five permanent members of the Security Council."

Or at least force them to recuse from voting.

Can they kick Russia out of the United Nations entirely?

Of the UN security council.

The SOVIET UNION is.

I think we should recognize the Ukraine, instead of Russia, as the proper holder of the seat on the security council.

The seat was transferred to Russia without further stipulation after the dissolution of the USSR.

I think now is the time to admit that a mistake was made by allowing Russia to take the Soviet Union seat. It shoukd go to a state that believes in the UN and will carry out its mission. That is NOT today’s Russia.

Only way to do something like that is to start UN 2.0 from scratch. Of course that means Russia owns UN 1.0 along with its current resources.

Removing Russia would be against the purpose of the UN. It was formed so the two opposing sides can meet and resolve differences. Neither of them can takeover cause the other can veto.

can be overridden by 60% of the member countries of the UN voting to do so.
