Russian official apologises for war in Ukraine at UN climate meet

Source: France 24/AFP

Paris (AFP) – The Russian head of delegation at a major UN climate conference apologised for his country's invasion of Ukraine on Sunday, which he said lacked justification, according to several sources who heard him speak at the virtual meeting.

The surprise intervention from Russia’s Oleg Anisimov at the closed-door meeting followed an electrifying live statement from his Ukranian counterpart, Svitlana Krakovska, who spoke passionately about her country's plight.

"Let me present an apology on behalf of all Russians not able to prevent this conflict," Anisimov said at the closing plenary of the virtual, 195-nation forum, according to three sources who heard him speak.

Delegates and observers to the sometimes fraught meetings, which had been scheduled to end Friday, were stunned by the back-to-back statements Sunday, according to half-a-dozen participants.

The world needs all right-thinking Russians to help us pick up the pieces.

He's a throw back who has lost his way. He needs to get out of the business of government. Putin needs to go join his chubby buddy and his Slovanian sex worker at Mary-go-loco or better yet a desert island.

Then there's the whole war crimes deal. He may not go quietly, which is fine by me. If the goes in the "traditional" Russian method, I won't bat an eye. He just needs to go.

He doesn't venture too far away from a hospital. Because I see a need for one in his future based on the history of Putin and his thugs.

He probably should stay away from windows and be very careful of sharp objects, and if he is not in Russia, stay out. If he is, he should get out.

That had to take courage, because it tells the world that all of Russia is not in favor of Putin's Folly by any means.

Comparisons are being made to 1939 Poland, but I wonder if there was the same degree of pushback that we are seeing today? That is a question not a statement.

is when the walls begin to close in on him, and they eventually will, I believe he may try one last devastating blow like Khan did at the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. He really needs to be taken out before we get to that point or things will get much much worse. And not just for the Ukrainians.
