Manchin joins with Senate GOP to block bill guaranteeing abortion access
Source: The Hill
Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.) joined with Senate Republicans on Monday night to oppose legislation codifying the right to an abortion.
Senators voted 46-48 to move the bill toward a debate on the Senate floor, falling short of the three-fifths vote needed to move it forward.
The bill, which passed the House last year, enshrines the right to an abortion and pushes back against state-level restrictions. The Senates failed vote comes as the Supreme Court is weighing a case that would curb Roe vs. Wade.
Sadly it looks like the Supreme Court will limit abortion rights on the coming months. Thats why the bill is essential, Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said.

When McConnell lost Georgia senate races, he went into action on two sitting senators.

(1,526 posts)My family is from WV, and we were back in southern WV in coal country.
The local family were talking about how many of the coal mines and rights had been bought up by Russian oligarchs, and some were being reopened.
I do not have any other direct links, but this makes sense with Manchins coal money sources. Also Trump digs coal campaign, if it were tied to Russian money.

Thanks for the information. I didn't know about the Russian/WVa mine connections.

(1,879 posts)I don't need the endless instruction from the "acktuallies" who are content with his behavior about how this dirtbag has made himself so powerful. He'd otherwise be a useless turd on this side of the bowl of one of the poorest states in the US.
Try to defend him when he won't endorse Tim Ryan or the DEM nominee from PA. Because he won't and why would he?

(4,616 posts)Those who defend Manchin because "we need him to keep control of the senate" clearly haven't the slightest clue that we currently DO NOT have control of the senate BECAUSE of Manchin. What should be obvious as the nose on your face seems to elude some. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

(2,787 posts)he just hasn't announced it formally yet. I think it's as obvious as a slap to the face. Frankly, yes... we may need him to hold on to the "majority" for all the good that's doing us this year, but I hope he loses his next election. Even with a Republican in his seat, at least we'd know where he stands... and not be holding out ever decreasing hope on a lost cause.

(4,616 posts)We NOW have control of the senate? We have a number on paper. That's it? Or is there some secret knowledge you have of all those Biden initiatives flying out of the senate and passed into law? Do tell, what has the majority been able to pass through the senate and what is just sitting there rotting? And who prevented passage? I'll wait. If this is what you call control of the senate, it doesn't really matter who the Senator of WV is does it.

Until we get money out of our electoral process, nothing will change. And the ones who can legislate the change we need, are the very ones who benefit from the current system. What a clusterfuck.

(92,180 posts) Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania the only Democrats not to explicitly endorse it. Casey voted to allow debate, which he said in advance he would do. Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine, who have a record of supporting abortion rights, introduced an amendment ahead of the vote that would still codify Roe and would remove portions of the WHPA that they found too broad. In the end, though, they both voted against the bill.

(1,962 posts)Just imagine how many more great things Biden could be doing if it wasn't for this twit, and Sinema, who should lose her boot-wearing privileges.
Of course, the article says how he "joined with Senate Republicans." Like he is ever joined with Senate Democrats on anything. Joining with Republicans is what he always does. "Manchin Joins Republicans" is no headline. "Manchin Joins Democrats" would be. You know, like how no one cares about "Dog Bites Man", but "Man Bites Dog" would grab a lot of attention.
Thanks for nothing... as usual, Manchin.

..............GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) voted against advancing the Democratic bill but introduced a proposal shortly before the vote to codify Roe vs. Wade.
I have long supported a womans right to choose, but my position is not without limits, and this partisan Womens Health Protection Act simply goes too far. It would broadly supersede state laws and infringe on Americans religious freedoms, Murkowski said.
The fact that my choice is between this bill, or nothing at all, shows how insincere Majority Leader Schumer is about protecting womens rights. Failing to conduct any outreach and reducing this important issue to nothing more than a designed-to-fail show vote is a disservice to women across America, she added.
