Most Americans say the coronavirus is not yet under control and support restrictions
Source: Washington Post
Most Americans say some restrictions on normal activities should remain in place to try to control the coronavirus, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll, which finds that public wariness of the pandemic lingers even as federal health officials and a growing roster of governors have softened mask advice.
The nationwide survey also shows that, two years into a health crisis that has claimed nearly 950,000 lives in the United States, bipartisan majorities think the virus is only somewhat under control or not at all controlled. Even so, most say they have fully or mostly returned to their normal, pre-coronavirus activities. Perceptions of the dangers posed by the coronavirus and attitudes toward restrictions reveal substantial partisan differences, according to the poll.
Taken together, just over a third of U.S. adults say the coronavirus pandemic is mostly or completely under control; but 29 percent of Democrats say they hold that view, compared with 41 percent of Republicans. The 34 percent overall who say they regard the pandemic as largely controlled is among the highest proportion since surveys began tracking such attitudes early in the pandemic. Yet nearly 6 in 10 U.S. adults think it is more important to control the virus, with some restrictions in daily life, while 4 in 10 prefer no restrictions.
The Post-ABC poll was conducted immediately before the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced a new framework Friday based on a revised set of metrics that dramatically reduces the areas of the country where the public health agency recommends people wear masks. The new formula is designed with the goals of protecting people from serious illness and preventing hospitals and other parts of communities health-care systems from being overrun with covid-19 patients.

(43,044 posts)I haven't been masking up. I thought I caught it 4 times already. Early on, March 2020, twice last fall, and this February. It amounted to very little, an overnight sore throat, a lot of nasal discharge, 2 days of light cough and it was over. So maybe that wasn't it. I've never been tested, but got vaxxed super early. I will mask up in crowded places though - a retailer at peak times, or an indoor gathering.

(3,234 posts)I'm tired of people being so selfish that they can't take the minimum precautions to not only protect themselves but everyone around them. You caught Covid 4 times? That number itself is ridiculous. Did you ever stop to think how many others in your orbit you infected? How many of those that were infected because of you not willing to do the basics like masking up, were immunocompromised?

(45,380 posts)if you're in an area with high numbers of community spread, hospitalizations, low vaccination, etc. then it's wise to keep on social distancing.
I'm still masking but have done more indoor activities now that numbers are way down in my area. My city lifted our mask mandate for most businesses yesterday.
People just have to watch the numbers and act accordingly. I feel reasonably safe with my vaccines and booster that I'm unlikely to need hospitalization or die.
People had enough opportunities in the US to get vaccinated so it's time to work on vaccinating the developing world. I love telling antivaxx conservatives that someone overseas is getting their vaccine since they don't want it. I hear a lot less whining about me stealing their jobs these days during the so-called labor shortage. There was much more whining during the recession.

(9,256 posts)Mask mandates lifted for this area which is seeing a reduction in cases. No masks required in church this week but still no shaking hands or other close contact. Im vaxxed and boostered and feel pretty good about things right now. My daughter had Covid 2x, once in fall
2020 before vaccines - she was pretty sick but made a full recovery - and back in January she got omicron after she was vaccinated, was like a cold for her. Somehow no one else in the family got it either time.

(16,898 posts)they can cow politicians and media, but as long as significant numbers people are still dying every day, I don't accept it is over. I'll continue masking, social distancing and sanitizing. The bullies forced the government and media to cave on policies that would have protected more of us. I am disgusted, and want nothing to do with the mouth-breathing knuckle-dragging idiots who think they can shape policy with a ballbat.

(7,520 posts)...for the foreseeable future.
My area has a lot of people still wearing masks in the grocery store in general, so that could be part of the reason cases are down.

(10,135 posts)Each individual has to make that decision, and your life depends on you making the right decision. So, let's hope you have full control of your faculties and you have access to accurate information. Otherwise you're dead.
Really all these idiot anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers make it seem like no big deal. Just do what you want and if you die, well too bad, so sad for you. Tell that to my dead neighbor, dead friend, dead elderly acquaintances. But at least you're dead because of your own stupid decision not the government's. Well, dead is dead and if the government can help me from dying I'm all for it.
So in order to make this life threatening decision, what's the death rate of your average flu in the US? Since the flu normally hits in the cold months, not the summer, you can't just take the number of deaths in the US from flu and break it down over a 12 month period. Anyway, I broke the numbers down as reasonably as possible and I'm estimating about 250 deaths a day, country wide will equal deaths due to a bad flu. If or when our death rate nation wide drops to 250 then I think it will be safe to treat COVID like the flu.

(5,926 posts)otherwise its a crap shoot. I think there is a lot of fresh meat out there for this virus to multiply in.
Farmer-Rick
(10,135 posts)Like you say it's kind of a crap shoot. I think I'll stick with outside venues and no travel with others for awhile still.

(14,558 posts)not to mention PROFITS, from whining and puling about their free-dumb. Sadly, the one thing that could end the Trump pandemic is a vaccine mandate. It really is. They are fighting it so much just so they can blame Biden and the Dems for failing to get it under control. We all know this.
Makes me sick, because many Americans, as always, will fall for those lies.

(9,335 posts)As much as I'd love to stop masking, it'll take a shift in cases (no new ones for two weeks is a good one) to make me stop wearing them.

(7,404 posts)Like three people in the entire chamber are wearing masks, and those look like staff, none of the politicians on either side
BumRushDaShow
(128,444 posts)But what should be more notable is how many are NOT in the chamber at all and are probably "attending virtually" (that speaks volumes).
