Mexico declines to impose economic sanctions on Russia

Source: Reuters

MEXICO CITY, March 1 (Reuters) - Mexico will not impose any economic sanctions on Russia for invading Ukraine, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Tuesday.

He also criticized what he called censorship of Russian state-sponsored media by social media companies.

"We are not going to take any sort of economic reprisal because we want to have good relations with all the governments in the world," Lopez Obrador told a news conference.

Lopez Obrador's position stands in contrast to the international sanctions imposed on Russia for President Vladimir Putin's actions.

Freeze Obrador out of any new beneficial economic initiatives or currency help or other things. Cripple his ability to generate favorable publicity in his own country.

And let him know now what and why it is happening.

Sanctions on Obrador might be a good idea, but not on Mexico, per se.

by every American just canceling any vacation plans to Mexico for, let's say at least a year. Instead, how about Hawaii or San Diego the Caribbean, Puerto Rico could still use help after that hurricane that crippled the island or anywhere else but Mexico.

That would make for a good handle: Anywhere but Mexico!!

Much like the campaign donor sanctions against Republicans who supported the insurrection. They all jump back onboard once the news cycle moves on.

Here I thought he was an improvement over the last President down there.

Lopez Obrador's comments came in response to a question about the interest in Mexico of Russia's second-largest oil producer Lukoil (LKOH.MM) and Russian airline Aeroflot (AFLT.MM).

Lukoil said on Friday it has completed its acquisition of a 50% operator interest in an offshore oil project in Mexico, part of its drive to expand its global reach. read more

That might be the reason.

This comment isn't a value judgment either way, merely stating a possible reason for their refusal.

On a personal note, I think Mexico should be against the unprovoked invasion of a sovereign nation.

I am also aware of the impact of the proxy wars in Latin America during the Cold War.

That, too, may be a consideration.

Latin American countries tend to keep their noses out of business not perceived to be theirs (not agreeing with it, just stating a historical fact).
Most LA nations did very little in either WWI or II.
Interestingly, most have had their territorial sovereignty breached in some capacity during the last 200 years. So while we might think that would be a reason to support Ukraine, I think things are a bit more complicated.
Also…a lot of LA countries turned towards the East in the last couple of years. Wonder why that happened.

I am reminded again what a toad DT is but MX deciding against sanctions is just odd.

Trump also suggested the U.S. should deploy a similar "peace force" to the U.S.-Mexico border.

"We could use that on our southern border. That’s the strongest peace force I’ve ever seen. There were more army tanks than I’ve ever seen. They’re going to keep peace, all right," he said.

From this side of the Atlantic it doesn’t seem unreasonable to expect this - or any other - Mexican government worthy of the name to be a bit less corrupt and a bit more competent.

As it is they are barely more than wannabe members of the BRICS club - who themselves are starting to have a whiff of the Axis Powers about them at governmental level.

I don't think Mexico has anything to gain by it, and they have a full plate of problems at home. If you look at it from a historic perspective the invasion of the Ukraine is just a repeat of the Mexican American War. The average Mexican would probably agree with him in not getting involved in US and European affairs. Neither the US or Europe have never done much for them. I also don't Mexican sanctions would amount to much as far as Russia is concerned. Of course, I am prejudiced having just spent a sunny afternoon across the border. Got new bifocals.

48. Why Mexico's president is buddies with Trump despite years of insults
Wed Mar 2, 2022, 06:42 AM
Mar 2022

snip//

President Donald Trump for years has insulted Mexicans with his promises to build a border wall to keep out migrants, criminals, drugs and, most recently, the coronavirus. But that’s not stopping Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador from heading to the White House for his first face-to-face meeting with Trump on Wednesday.

López Obrador, a lifelong populist and face of Mexico’s left, actually has a lot in common with Trump. They’ve built a relationship based on their respect for each other's nationalist, authoritarian tendencies and their ability to stay out of each other's way on domestic issues.

The U.S.A. has never forgiven Mexico for that.

Before then we were essentially stealing Mexican oil and abusing Mexican workers with low pay and incredibly dangerous working conditions.

As the Soviet Union, and later Russia, modernized their own petroleum industry Mexico partnered with them rather than the U.S.A..
