The Nevada governor and his wife were accosted and chased from a restaurant in Las Vegas on Sunday, as two men, one a rightwing digital creator, shouted profanities and threats.
In a statement, Steve Sisolak said the men shouted racist threats at his wife, Kathy Sisolak, who is of Chinese heritage.
The Sisolaks planned to meet their daughter at the restaurant. They were not accompanied by security guards.
Cellphone video posted to social media showed a man in a red T-shirt reading Cannabis and Combat asking Sisolak for a picture. While posing with his arm around the governor, the man began to insult him.

Gov. Steve Sisolak and his wife, Kathy, were accosted and threatened at a Las Vegas restaurant Sunday by at least two men who shouted racial and anti-government epithets at them in an incident captured on a cellphone video.
The governor released a statement Monday decrying the incident but declined additional comment, noting it was under investigation by state police. The governor was without his security detail at the time he was confronted.
A minute-long video, sent to news outlets and posted on social media, shows the encounter at a restaurant identified as Lindo Michoacan in Summerlin. It begins with a man appearing to want a selfie with the governor before unleashing a stream of profanities at him.
I cant tell you what a piece of f-ing s- you are, the man says.

(2,190 posts)We know what they are and we know what they are capable of. That vermin should have had 3 agents with their guns drawn staring him in the face as soon as he started his threats. There is nothing - NOTHING - that these scum of the earth will not stoop to.

because some college students followed that traitor Sinema into the bathroom and ranted against her. They didn't use profanity, or anything like that, they simply tried to make the case for her to vote for Biden's agenda. Let's see how many republicans condemn this behavior (not holding my breath.)

(2,738 posts)I wish I could say Dems didn't do that, but unfortunately some of us did repeatedly during TFG's administration. Restaurants were some of the locations.
Bad behavior is catching and makes everyone feel pissy. It's my belief that courtesy and respect are hallmarks of democracy and promote it.
What was that movie, was it "Pay it Forward" that demonstrated making the world a better place. Yeah, more of that.

(2,738 posts)being harangued at dinner with friends or family. Sarah Sanders was yelled at and ultimately refused service, and Kristjen Nielson was forced to leave another restaurant. Other officials were harassed at restaurants or at home.
Or recently some activists getting on an elevator to continue pressing Kristen Sinema to vote their way. Maybe they didn't berate her, but I feel sure it was scary and intimidating.
That is certainly not as bad as racist threats. But it's a difference of degree, big degrees to be sure. But they are more similar than different. Intimidation. Ugly, scary stuff.
I'm sure that right-wingers are doing more of it and far worse. After all some plotted to kidnap the governor of Michigan. But I don't want us to excuse in ourselves what we condemn in others. It's of a piece and feeds the beast.

(6,617 posts)courteous and respectful candidates kept losing seats in govt so it was time to try a different tact. I am not necessarily saying that is a good thing, but where do you go from here? How do you get irrational zombies to listen?

(2,738 posts)Not in the short term. We have let demagogues get a hold of powerful means of communication and disinformation. Bad manners and bad behavior are now metastasizing. The virus is being passed back and forth between groups across ideological lines.
In the long-haul, there are some things I think we could do if we have the will to do it. Require news channels to be truthful. Free speech should not apply to news unless clearly labeled as opinion. Flood the zone with positive messages and truthful ones. Find ways to ensure publicly funded support for newspapers in cities across the country. Boost civics education and education in media literacy and recognition of disinformation. Teach democratic values like the brotherhood and sisterhood of all humankind, tolerance, acceptance of others, and how did disagree without being disagreeable.
