Most speech watchers say State of the Union made them feel optimistic, proud - CBS News poll

Source: CBS News

Most Americans who watched President Biden's first State of the Union address approved of what they heard, and many said it made them feel optimistic and proud.

After nearly two years of the coronavirus pandemic, more than half who tuned in Tuesday night said the speech made them feel like the coronavirus is mostly behind us.

Older Americans who watched the speech were a bit more likely to say the speech made them feel the coronavirus will be with us for a while. CBS News interviewed speech viewers immediately after the president's speech.

Overall, about 8 in 10 of speech watchers approved of Mr. Biden's address tonight, including majorities of both Democrats and independents. Among members of his own party, his speech received high marks among both liberals and moderates.

Lots more breakdown of opinions at the link. Good news for Biden, showing he moved the needle in his favor on several key issues, like inflation.

of the speech was to say that Biden had not covered anything new and to point out that there was a lot of tension in his audience, accompanied by booing. No attention to the amount of applause.

Makes me wonder if NPR is seeing Fox as a model to imitate.

IF that’s what’s happening.

And it’s just that one poll, at least that I’ve seen. The public is fickle, and easily led astray.

That's how I see it. I watched SOTU on Roku NBC streaming, when Biden's speech concluded, Chucky Cheese did what I always see him doing, made snide remarks about Biden's avoidance to state how Biden didn't mention protecting/defending Ukraine after Biden directly said we'll defend every inch of NATO member country. Chucky Cheese said he was expecting hear sandwiched into the segment but Biden pivoted to entirely different subject. (paraphrasing). and other snide remarks.

We have a very assholish/fickle media punditry class and that's just how they roll. I clicked off the tv at that point, maybe I missed some intelligent responses to that dick head but because of that I choose not to listen and give them "ratings" .

Unfortunately, it feels like "most" people listen and allow these remarks to persuade their thoughts.

It's really effed up. But that's what we have, I believe.

That's all the GOP is these day - a party of bullies. We know how to handle that kind of trash, though.

They are the asshole kids who never grew up.

Joe Biden was always middle of the road American while leaning left on many issues, and right on some issues. He was never and is not now an ideologue. He has good judgment and associates with good people and employs a highly skilled staff. The right ingredients make for the right stuff.

To the Republicans any person identifying oneself as a Democrat is by definition a Marxist, traitor to the nation, and should be destroyed by any means possible to save the great American republic.

Biden has done nothing but be conciliatory with the Republicans and they never fail to lash out with unjustifiable outrage and idiocy.

I am not sure how much interest I have and if it's even a plausible agenda to "pander" to Republican voters. We can be respectful toward them when it's warranted, but they must be called out for the budding fascists they've become, when that is warranted, which is sadly all too often. Dems have been called communists for decades and its worn down a lot of people on the center right into believing it. I don't know but I suspect only a tiny fraction will ever get off that reservation.

We need to find a way to get the NON VOTERS and turn them Into Democratic voters.

... still, the Deplorables complain. They thought the speech was terrible. If Russia said they could come in and "clean" the US of its Democrats, the Trumpsters would welcome them.
