Germany is ready should Russia stop exporting gas to the country as Berlin develops a new energy battle plan to end that reliance.
The countrys economy minister told Deutschlandfunk radio that in the case that Russia cuts off its gas supply, Germany was ready to boost strategic reserves.
We are prepared for that. I can give the all-clear for the current winter and summer, Robert Habeck said.
"For the next winter, we would take further measures," he added.

Now they're preparing to do this?

(21,287 posts)way to go Germany. Germany was slow out of the gate but it certainly caught up.
Remember, 60% of Russia's exports is from oil and gas. Russia is drilling for oil and gas in god forsaken regions of Siberia. Building a pipeline all of that way for nothing, not going to help Putin's image in Russia.

Everyone on the planet suffers and all future generations will suffer because of this very poor decision to close nuclear plants to burn coal.

(33,512 posts)These are reactors of the type at Civeaux. They are expected to be back up in the early spring.
Hopefully this goes well.
France has recommitted itself to nuclear energy, in which it is a world leader.

(57,378 posts)Fri Dec 31, 2021: Germany shuts down half of its 6 remaining nuclear plants
By FRANK JORDANS
BERLIN (AP) Germany on Friday is shutting down half of the six nuclear plants it still has in operation, a year before the country draws the final curtain on its decades-long use of atomic power.
The decision to phase out nuclear power and shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy was first taken by the center-left government of Gerhard Schroeder in 2002.
His successor, Angela Merkel, reversed her decision to extend the lifetime of Germanys nuclear plants in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima disaster in Japan and set 2022 as the final deadline for shutting them down.
The three reactors now being shuttered were first powered up in the mid-1980s. Together they provided electricity to millions of German households for almost four decades.

(38,309 posts)Wind and solar power are simply not viable without natural gas. Nimble gas power plants are used to stabilize the grid as wind and solar power drop in and out, which happens on a scale of minutes, hours, days, and weeks. ( At grid scales the realistic capacity of batteries to fill these gaps is measured in minutes, if anyone thinks that's the answer. )
Germany will no doubt be increasing their dependence on coal power plants in Germany and in neighboring countries. This will decrease the capacity of their electric grid to utilize intermittent wind and solar power.
Many people saw this coming. The question wasn't if, but when.
Like many environmental catastrophes it came sooner than expected.

(30,613 posts)This is fixable. Short term, we are fracking the fuck out of America and can sell them gas. Longer-term, storage options need to be brought on line. Many, many storage technologies are in development for different situations.

(33,512 posts)We spent over three trillion dollars on this planet on so called "renewable energy" between 2004-2019 with the result that world dependence on dangerous fossil fuels is increasing and the rate of increase in the concentrations of deadly climate change gases is increasing, not decreasing.
Anyone talking about using energy storage to make a failed system that has never, not once, after nearly half a century of mindless cheering, produced as much energy per year as nuclear has been producing, despite mindless catcalls, since 1990 is not familiar with the second law of thermodynamics nor with the LCA of mining.
Wind and solar are not "green," nor are they sustainable.
The cost of the fantasy to the contrary are falling on all humanity and all future generations of humanity.
Wind and solar will never be as clean and sustainable as nuclear energy.

(12,523 posts)It seems too many people don't think past the battery, solar panel or windmill to everything that's IN the them & WHERE it comes from when they're made
The US & EU don't have most of those materials. China & Russia DO. Haven't we learned to NOT get ourselves slaves to their materials?
