UN votes to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine and calls for withdrawal
Source: The Guardian
The United Nations has voted overwhelmingly for a resolution deploring Russias invasion of Ukraine and called for the immediate withdrawal of its forces, in a global expression of outrage that highlighted Russias increasing isolation.
In an emergency session of the UNs general assembly, 141 of the 193 member states voted for the resolution, 35 abstained and five voted against.
The resolution, which was co-sponsored by 94 countries, said the UN deplores in the strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine. It demanded that the Russian Federation immediately cease its use of force against Ukraine and immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces.

(6,110 posts)either against or abstain. No one wants to experience the horrible experience Ukraine is going through right now.

(128,553 posts)and it is somewhat surprising although I know that both Russia and China have been heavily involved in projects in NE and E. Africa for decades.
For example in Egypt, they helped to build the Aswan High Dam (that I got to see although no one was allowed to take pics of it) -
That basically electrified the desert from Abu Simbel (they had to move the Temple in Abu Simbel up to a higher cliff due to the creation of Lake Nasser when the dam was put into operation) some 800 miles up to Cairo and the Nile Delta.
So out in nowhere land, that enabled vendors with stands hooked up to electricity, to power refrigerators for bottled water to sell to the tourists.

(31,949 posts)Not counting Russia itself I count 30 countries who are not Russian neighbors and 9 that are. I guess I have a different definition of "most". Do you have a different count?

(6,110 posts)China, India, N Korea, all of whom have nukes, and immediate neighbors such as Belarus. IDK why African countries would side with Russia. May be because of China influence since China has lots of investments developing those countries. So indirectly it is influence of neighbor China.

(19,188 posts)"tsk, tsk" and an icy stare from the nation's that voted for the resolution? Because that will protect all Ukrainians from the devastating effects of bullets and shrapnel tearing through their flesh.

(10,813 posts)Israeli & Russian forces both operating in Syria, Israel lets Russia know when a airstrike is happening to avoid fratricide, probably afraid if they get on Russia's naughty list Russia may start shooting down their planes. After the Russian strike on the Jewish Holocaust memorial in Kyiv, Babyn Yar though I am surprised they aren't joining in, that had to have made voters in Israel unhappy.

(107,767 posts)Simon & Garfunkel once described a scenario in which "friends just can't be found," and one can easily imagine that, following Wednesday's United Nations vote condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin and company might find solace in listening to "Bridge Over Troubled Water" on repeat.
According to The New York Times, the U.N. General Assembly adopted a resolution condemning Russian aggression, with 141 countries voting in favor, 34 abstaining, and only five voting against.
The result matched the international outpouring of support for Ukraine seen around the world in the past week. Pro-Ukraine demonstrations sprang up in London, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Tokyo, Seoul, Cape Town, and several other cities. During President Biden's State of the Union address on Tuesday, many lawmakers waved small Ukrainian flags or wore Ukrainian flag pins.
The no votes on the resolution came from five authoritarian nations: Russia, North Korea, Eritrea, Syria, and Russia's close ally Belarus.
