Trump violated federal laws in bid to overturn election, Capitol attack panel claims
Source: theguardian.com
The House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack said in a major filing on Wednesday that it believed that Donald Trump violated multiple federal laws to overturn the 2020 election, including obstructing Congress and defrauding the United States.
The revelations came as part of a filing that intended to force John Eastman, Trumps former lawyer, to turn over thousands of emails and records since his participation in potential crimes destroyed his arguments for attorney-client privilege protections.
House counsel Douglas Letter said in the 61-page filing that the select committee had a basis for concluding Trump violated the law by obstructing or attempting to obstruct an official proceeding and defrauded the United States by interfering with lawful government functions.
The former president knew he had not won enough electoral college votes to win the 2020 election, yet nevertheless sought thenvice-president Mike Pence to manipulate the results in his favor, the filing said about Trumps obstruction.

(12,823 posts)The only thing that would cause that to be the case, is that the GOP is owned by illegal money.
It's obvious now that DeSantas is part of that group.

(1,693 posts)but certainly not from holding my breath because that would be futile. As it was with the criminal actions perpetrated by the Bush administration, we will forever suffer the consequences of those reluctant to pursue justice for fear of appearing partisan and, in this case, the results will prove to be even more horrific.

(10,561 posts)... need to prosecute every crime. If not, the next one will do worse. Why don't people see - consequences determine whether or not behavior is repeated, especially with people like Vlad and The Donald.

(28,007 posts)Name me one politician, one former politician, a former president, a former president's cabinet member, or a former person who had any association with a former president who has even been investigated by DOJ? Name me just one person. Apparently investigating those people would be partisan.
Day 78 since the select committee sent the Mark Meadows criminal referral to DOJ.
Day 50 since the Michigan AG referred the fake elector scandal to DOJ.
Hopefully DOJ is investigating the stolen, flushed, burned, eaten, torn up classified documents, some of which are still missing. I will wait a couple of months for news that DOJ is investigating this one so I don't get charged with being too impatient.
This is another attempt by the select committee to get DOJ to act.
How is the Cyber Ninja FOIA going? Has that bogus company turned over any documents yet? Has that bogus company paid the fine that a judge imposed on them? Fuck no, because they were a fake company with a mail box for an office and DOJ allowed them to have access to ballots, voter information, election materials and equipment, all in violation of state and federal laws. Because DOJ did nothing, these fraudits have spread across the country where Magats have been getting access to materials that should have remained in the custody of election officials. We now have a new practice where a certified, audited, election, can be challenged, can be re-audited by a third party not affiliated with legal election officials. If Republicans don't like the outcome of an election, after the fact, after it lost challenges in the courts, it can still do a 3rd party audit thanks to Merrick Garland. This opens up a huge can of worms for future elections.

(28,007 posts)The select committee will lay out, hopefully in prime time, all of the crimes that Trump and his traitorous allies have committed that could have been prosecuted, that could have been at least investigated by DOJ.
After the American people see all of this criminal activity perpetrated by Republicans it will inspire Democrats to GOTV, because that may be our last chance to hold anyone accountable, vote them out.
