though the energy must be made up, and infrastructure takes time to build, even green infrastructure. I keep hoping for a "Green Manhattan Project/Marshall Plan/Great Society" undertaking.

Things like this disconnect Russia from the world economy provide an impetus to make change... otherwise it is "kick the can down the road some more"

There are only 2 stark alternatives here.

Turn off the pipelines and the money that supports a murderous dictator and his war machine

Or

Leave the pipelines on because of potential "starvation and disease".

Or we can be comfortable and have 0 manufacturing.

Most Chinese can't handle the cold of Hebei, Liaoning, Jilin, or Heilongiang provinces.

On top of that, the Chinese military is as much of a paper tiger as the Russian army has turned out to be.

Germany does after all have a number areas where there has been volcanic activity within the last 10,000 years so those areas could be potential sites for such plants.

"We stopped that 30 million barrels/day import from Russia and now import 30 million barrels/day from Russia. So obviously Russia's selling *less* oil. Aren't we good!! Of course, the Formally Republic of Chalesia last week used to buy its oil 100% from Albonia, 30 million barrels/day, and now it buys 30 million barrels/day from Russia. Evil, evil, Chalesiites."

Fun.

Gible.
