PANAMA CITY, Fla. — Florida’s surgeon general, Dr. Joseph Ladapo, made claims Thursday that masks didn’t save lives during the COVID-19 pandemic and criticized doctors who recommended or mandated wearing masks.

Dr. Ladapo was speaking during a campaign-style event in Panama City with Governor Ron DeSantis and others when he made his claims.

“What did the two randomized clinical trials that we’ve done during the pandemic, what did they show? Ask them that when they tell you that these things save lives,” Ladapo said. “One found nothing, zero benefit. The other found a small benefit, like a tiny benefit that’s a little bit methodologically shaky. And by the way, none of them found a benefit in young people. Not a single one found a benefit in young people. That’s the highest-quality evidence, that’s what it showed.”

Ladapo went on to criticize the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for using what he called lower quality studies for its data. He then inferred doctors and other researchers who found the usefulness of masks must have “been taken over by zombies or something.”

Florida Democrats walked out of the confirmation hearing for Joseph Ladapo, Governor Ron DeSantis’ choice to become the state’s surgeon general.

Ahead of the debate on whether to appoint Dr Ladapo to the position, Democratic State Senator Lauren Book said that her party would leave before the committee vote.

The Democrats left the hearing after questioning Dr Ladapo on his beliefs on the effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccines and masks. They also asked him about his treatment of Democratic State Senator Tina Polsky.

The Tampa Bay Times reported that during a meeting in October between Ms Polsky and Dr Ladapo, he refused to wear a face-covering, despite that Ms Polsky was being treated for breast cancer.

8. I live in FL, my dad was found to have cancer during the COVID height here.

The hospital was flooded with COVID patients. They had, I believe, two floors blocked off because it was nothing but COVID there.

My dad's cancer was very unexpected, he had to have extensive surgery and stayed over a week. We had gotten into the habit of maintaining a strict regimen regarding COVID because my mom and I have compromised immune systems. Masks whenever you go out, hand sanitizer in your pocket at all times, shower and new clothes as soon as you get home, etc. Dad insisted on keeping his mask on in the hospital, and he had hand sanitizer at his bedside at all times.

Left without any problems, and this was not a hospital known for a 100% safety rate. Maybe it was good luck, but we're assuming it's not.

He is still fighting cancer, but he's back to work as the superintendent of a big golf course. Most of his days are spent talking to a lot of people, from workers to residents to bigwigs, and many regularly arrive with COVID (they get tested now). He kept wearing his mask and keeping his hands clean, and he still hasn't had COVID. Had one heck of a bad cold recently, but fortunately negative on COVID.

I wear one on the rare occasion I get my cane and hobble out into the world, and I don't mind it one bit. Honestly, I don't see the big deal. Does it prevent COVID? No, nothing does, and no mask acn be 100% guaranteed. Can it HURT to wear one? I doubt that, too. I'll take my chances with the mask.

The studies cited include somewhat ok paper masks and ineffective cloth masks. Current guidance is K95, KF94, & KN95 are now the only recommended masks to really protect. Those 3 classes all protect decent even if around unmasked.

The original guidance about using any mask, and double masking was temporary during when the 95 & 94 masks were in short supply.

The studies that Quack 'Surgon' General cited studies that included known ineffective masks without measuring each category and they may have even been surveys where maskholes could misstate their mask use. More rigorous recent research has demonstrated decent effectiveness for the 94&95 masks vs COVID & influenza even around the unmasked.

This is why most of the mandates are rapidly lifting for now. Time to let Darwin take some out. Sadly the immune compromised are in a tight situation and should look to use UV-C air treatment at home & in their vehicles and keep masking. Those of us a ethics should also remain masked in solidarity a with our fellow humans.

First, he signed an emergency rule that repealed quarantines for schoolchildren exposed to Covid. He also dismissed the vaccines and refused to say if he was vaccinated - and there was an interview posted here on DU with Florida State Senator Tina Polsky. He refused to wear a mask while in a meeting with her even though she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and was scheduled to undergo radiation therapy.
