Former AG Barr said Trump became enraged after being told election fraud claims were nonsense

Source: NBC News

Former U.S. Attorney General William Barr said then-President Donald Trump became furious after Barr told him there was no evidence that the 2020 election was fraudulent.

"I told him that all this stuff was bulls---... about election fraud. And, you know, it was wrong to be shoveling it out the way his team was," Barr said in an interview with NBC News's Lester Holt that's scheduled to air Sunday night. First highlights of the interview aired Thursday on MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports."

The televised interview was Barr's first since he stepped down as attorney general in late Dec. 2020. Barr is publishing a new book about his time in the Trump administration, which has prompted criticism from some that he remained silent about the former president until he could profit from book sales.

Barr pushed back on allegations that he abused his position as attorney general by essentially acting as Trump's personal lawyer, targeting the then-president's political enemies while cutting breaks for allies like Michael Flynn and Roger Stone.

Here is the thing about Barr. He was appointed AG because he was a long time proponent the idea of a unitary executive, which argues that the original intent of the Constitution puts all executive authority solely in the control of the president.

It is ironic that Barr's own tenure as AG establishes the fallacy and weaknesses of this theory, because if Barr went along with Trump's demands, we would now be a banana republic, because the DOJ would have carried out the directions of Trump.

Like Pence, he had some level of integrity, a line he would not cross.

That's the best I can say.

Trump, he said, "never really had a good idea of, you know, the role of the Department of Justice [and] to some extent, you know, the president’s role."

He's saying that Trump was an incompetent president. Which we all know is true, but here one of his Cabinet members says so.

Back in the days of Watergate, I bought and read almost every book published by all of those involved. Starting with All The Presidents Men, to john Dean, and Leon Jaworski, etc. This time around, not so much. All of these people that could have stood up but, nah, I'm going to save it for a book. Fuck you. If you really want top have a book burning lets start with Triggered.

I haven't been following this story very closely so I have a question: has Barr come up with an explanation of why his version of the Mueller report doesn't seem to bear much resemblance to the heavily redacted version he let us see?
