WASHINGTON, March 3 (Reuters) - U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said on Thursday the reactors at Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station "are protected by robust containment structures and reactors are being safely shut down".

Granholm said on Twitter she had just spoken with Ukraine's energy minister about the situation at the plant, where a fire broke out during fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces.

"We have seen no elevated radiation readings near the facility," Granholm said.

the fuel rods need to be cooled (even if scrammed).

The source of the electricity comes from 3 redundant sources...
The nuclear reactors and steam turbines
backup diesel generators
and the electric grid

turning off the reactors removes one of the sources of electricity needed to run the pumps.

Getting diesel fuel (either by truck or pipeline) is going to be dicey in a war zone

The Grid is likely a prime target for the russian army.

sp... no water, and both the reactor fuel rods and the spent fuel rods in the pools outside the containment buildings are at risk of overheating and generating a "China Syndrome" moment..

not as bad as a Chernobyl... but not good... not good at all.
