Source: The Independent
Russia has passed a new law meaning citizens who spread what it described as "fake" information about the military can be jailed for up to 15 years.

Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, is continuing to crack down on protesters taking to the streets to demonstrate against the conflict, which entered its ninth day on Friday.
Meanwhile, schools and media organisations have been ordered not to describe the invasion as a "war". Several outlets were shut down following negative coverage of the fighting.
...
Earlier this week, Mr Putin ordered the shut down of Russias only independent TV channel and a liberal radio station as the president ramped up efforts to censor coverage of the war, leaving citizens with propaganda from state-run outlets as their only source of information.

(full headline 'Russian Duma ...' wouldn't fit)
And of course, what is "false information" now in Russia is what reflects badly on Putin.

(29,205 posts)she doesn't like the war... but she has bought into the whole Russian propaganda story.
Claims that I only see what US media wants me to see (and the internet is controlled too)/
She repeated the whole "Ukraine is run by Nazis" bullshit.
I didn't even push back on all this... all I said was that I was sad.
I think she knows someplace deep down that she is being lied to but she can't bring herself to admit it. She cut me off with a "I don't want to talk about it"

(10,011 posts)Russia is a police state ruled by fear. Average citizens will be afraid to act until there is much greater mass. What happened in Belarus would be a warning to them. Lukashenko was voted out but refused to leave. Putin sent police to help him torture and imprison thousands. I doubt anyone can reason with Putin because he doesnt care what happens to anyone else. It will have to be a brave person willing to take himand his personal guardson.

(4,386 posts)Think about that for a minute, someone would be so enraged and/or threatened by a differing viewpoint, that they would go to such extremes. Talk about a sick piece of work. The trains and flights were supposedly full last night from Russians escaping. Scary shit. Martial law in Russia is draconian.

(17,931 posts)Why must brutal dictators put on such ridiculous pretenses? No one believes Russia's Duma, NK's Supreme Peoples Assembly or China's National Peoples Congress are anything but cheap facades. Few in those countries buy the bullshit. A failed attempt at legitimacy I suppose.
