PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) A suicide bomber struck inside a Shiite Muslim mosque in Pakistans northwestern city of Peshawar during Friday prayers, killing at least 56 worshippers and wounding 194 people, hospital officials said.
No militant group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. Both the Islamic State group and the Pakistani Taliban a militant group separate from the Taliban in Afghanistan have carried out similar attacks in the past in the area, located near the border with Afghanistan.
According to the spokesman at Peshawars Lady Reading Hospital, Asim Khan, many of the wounded were in critical condition. Scores of victims were peppered with shrapnel, several had limbs amputated and others were injured by flying debris.
Peshawar Police Chief Muhammed Ejaz Khan said the violence started when an armed attacker opened fire on police outside the mosque in Peshawars old city. One policeman was killed in the gunfight, and another police officer was wounded. The attacker then ran inside the mosque and detonated his suicide vest.

(1,568 posts)How did it help them? Im not being snarky, but trying to grasp the reasoning behind it. I guess because the idea of them doing just to kill people for their different beliefs seems too cartoon villainish.

(33,345 posts)They do it to terrorize the Shia (who are a minority) into acquiescence to Sunni rule.
Same dynamic in Iraq, except there's so many Shia they can fight back.

(1,568 posts)I cant see any way that this helps whatever cause they think they are fighting for. They dont gain power, control, resources as far as I know. Is it really just to murder innocent people as they just because they are from a different sect?

(1,568 posts)Way back when I used to think that if we just got everyone to talk to each other (like through the internet), then we would all realize that despite any differences were have, we're all humans who generally want the same thing.
Obviously extremely simplistic and naïve, but it would be nice to be so optimistic again.

(35,320 posts)I suspect that they would say it serves the killer's interests, in that he did a service to Allah. And that the killer would say that since a heretic is worse than an infidel, he served Allah by killing heretics.
So, yes, they would say it really is (really) just to murder people, guilty of being heretics--in a different sect.
What I think about the morality of the murderer's action has 0% relevance to them.

(1,568 posts)I wonder if we'll ever find a way to get people to not be assholes. It seems like even if even the world was generally a perfect place and we and other countries didn't have shitty policies that gave head assholes ammunition to recruit and incite, we'd still have to deal with irrational assholes.
