Cruz knocks Graham's call to assassinate Putin: 'An exceptionally bad idea'
Source: The Hill.com
Lawmakers, including some Republicans, are slamming a tweet that Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) issued on Thursday night where he appeared to be calling for the assassination of Russian President Vladimir Putin, with one senator calling it an exceptionally bad idea.
Is there a Brutus in Russia? Is there a more successful Colonel Stauffenberg in the Russian military? The only way this ends is for somebody in Russia to take this guy out. You would be doing your country and the world a great service, Graham said in a tweet.
(snip)
The remarks were immediately knocked by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and several other Republicans.
This is an exceptionally bad idea. Use massive economic sanctions; BOYCOTT Russian oil & gas; and provide military aid so the Ukrainians can defend themselves. But we should not be calling for the assassination of heads of state, the Texas senator said in response.

(6,363 posts)Calling for assassination just isn't a good idea. We can argue if it's the right thing to hope for but someone with a government voice should have a little more reserve in their public comments on the topic.

There's a hell of a lot of Russians in the US.
What happens when Putin starts calling for people to rise up and assassinate Biden?
Honestly, this isn't a path that government officials of any government should be going down when they aren't already in a shooting war.

If not, and if NONE of them do anything, that would be MADNESS to let ONE PERSON decide the fate of the WORLD!
They dont have to take him out they just have to remove him from power.

(12,555 posts)But removing him from power wouldn't be enough. He just needs to be taken out somehow. I just don't know HOW

(13,903 posts)you might get complete anarchy in Russia. Maybe not.
Might just have to cross that bridge when they hang Putin from it.

And fuck Ted Cruz.

(8,751 posts)If Graham gets to play any more golf at Mar-A-Logo. He may end up cemented to the bottom of a water hole, which, would be a great start to Make America Great. That comment HAD to chaff the giant obese orangoutangs ass. I hope the two adult male spawn were near when he heard it and started smashing shit.

(6,544 posts)Just was more blunt about it. I'm sure Ted Cruz is more worried about his holiday getaway plans (holiday meaning WW3) than he is with anything else

(5,734 posts)you did not announce it publicly in advance. All that achieves is making us look bad and putting Putin on even higher alert. I don't think our military and CIA need Graham's (whichever way the wind blows) direction. Just as they didn't need it when he was kissing TFG's ass.

We'd all love to see Vladimir Putin doing his Mussolini impression but assassinating the leader of another country is both against the law, and setting a dangerous precedent.

(21,768 posts)Now if Putin does die, even of natural causes, the Russians can air clips of a sitting US Senator calling for Putin's murder.

(36,074 posts)hard line oligarchs is one thing, to escalate is another.
The West can meet Putin's escalations with more retaliation but Putin has to suffer more than Ukraine does.
What could happen if he's assassinated might be a momentary stall of his military push, and during that time it could result in a reshuffle of hardliner leaders who themselves have swapped positions across his government. But all an assassination would produce is Ukraine occupation time. We'd have to wait to deal with any new leadership, while military leadership continues its original goal.
The former deputy undersecurity of the DoD on Ari Melber's time slot was right. We, the U.S., have to step up and actually do more.
Give the Ukrainians what they need: control Ukraine airspace and Ukrainians will suffer less death and ruin.
Beat the Russian military and you've beaten Putin.
I couldn't care less what broken clock Cruz says.
The Main Thing is that the West is not in the Putin business of assassination, even if Putin is.
