Russia says it's blocking Facebook in alarming new censorship push
Source: The Verge
Russias communications agency Roskomnadzor announced Friday that it is blocking access to Facebook in Russia. It cited 26 cases of discrimination against Russian media and information resources by Facebook since October 2020, in addition to the more-recent restrictions Facebook has placed on Russian state media outlets.
In response, Meta president of global affairs Nick Clegg tweeted in response to the move, saying Soon millions of ordinary Russians will find themselves cut off from reliable information, deprived of their everyday ways of connecting with family and friends and silenced from speaking out. We will continue to do everything we can to restore our services so they remain available to people to safely and securely express themselves and organize for action.
The block comes after increasing domestic protests over the countrys ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Russians have taken to the streets in massive numbers to protest the ongoing invasion, provoking thousands of arrests. The regime has denied any plans to institute martial law, but has issued ongoing threats to outlets that publish information critical of the ongoing war effort, including Wikipedia.

Many tech platforms have already begun restricting services in Russia. Google-owned YouTube has blocked Russian news channels RT and Sputnik in Europe, for example, while Facebook has blocked RT and Sputnik in the EU and stopped recommending Russian state media globally. Apple has also halted product sales in the country.

(70,516 posts)... trying to block Facebook and the news about the war is pretty rich. The truth will get to the people of
Russia you can be sure of that. Too many platforms are already out there for the Russian people, cell phones,
TV and radio signals from outside of Russia, YouTube, Tik Tok, newspapers, magazines, family members of the
troops, CDs, thumb drives, and so on.

all of which were about NFL players kneeling before the games a few years ago and
all 3 sites came from St. Petersburg, Russia. Trump used to promote those web
addresses too. True story .... I don't know if they were twitter sites, facebook, or
just web addresses.

I know everyone knows someone who relies on zuckerborg's empire to exchange opinions (and some facts.)
Still, the zealots have used the platform to espouse all sorts of nonsense, and zuck has egged them on to garner the marketing $s.
I don't remember. Did the famous "yellow press" of days gone by also use this model to get advertising $s?

(108,026 posts)Facebook took another swipe at Russia amid its invasion of Ukraine by pulling all of advertising from the country and refusing to run ads anywhere in the world from Russian marketers.
"Due to the difficulties of operating in Russia at this time, ads targeting people in Russia will be paused, and advertisers within Russia will no longer be able to create or run ads anywhere in the world, including within Russia," the company said Friday.
Earlier on Friday, Russia's tech and communications regulator Roskomnadzor said it officially blocked Facebook, after throttling access to the site for about a week.
While Facebook said it is working to keep its services available "to the greatest extent possible," the company did not provide an update late Friday on where that effort stood.
