Russian demand for sanctions relief threatens Iran nuclear talks

Source: Washington Post

VIENNA — Russia presented a new condition for a revival of the Iran nuclear deal on Saturday, saying that Moscow wants guarantees from the United States that Ukraine-linked sanctions won’t be applied to Russian trade and investment with Iran after the deal is restored.

The demand, made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow, threatens to derail talks to restore the 2015 deal just as diplomats in Vienna hoped to finalize an agreement by early next week.

Lavrov told a news conference that Russia was ready to accept a draft document restoring the deal. But he said there were “problems that have appeared recently from the point of view of Russia’s interests.”

Under the new agreement, the Biden administration is expected to lift sanctions on Iran imposed by President Donald Trump after he pulled the United States out of the deal in 2018, and Iran will be required to revert to restraints on its nuclear program. The original agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, would then be restored.

might have something to do with this Iran thing.

That was a disgrace being pulled out of that because John Kerry literally ran himself ragged getting it finally put in place.

When Russia can sell their oil and gas only to other dictators, they might want to change their tune. And all seized assets should be use to rebuild Ukraine and pay reparations to its citizens. Putin gambled that he could waltz into Ukraine and establish his own government loyal to him. Wrong. Now he needs to pay the price of a has-been dictator.

As for sanctions on Russia, they need to get worse now. The US and NATO need to lay out their whole sanctions plan for Putin. Every day they continue attacking Ukraine , new sanctions need to be implemented. For example:

March 5, end the sanctions on oil purchases from Venezuela and Iran
March 6, cancel all contracts to purchase oil and gas from Russia
March 7, confiscate all Russian cargo ships in US or NATO ports as assets of Russia
March 8, establish a UN commission to review the decision to allow Russia to take the USSR’s place on the Security Council when the USSR ended as a country
March 9, keep going with more sanctions on anything and everything Russian

Also announce that the sanctions will be prolonged for every day Putin refuses to stop the war and for every day even a single Russian military person remains in any part of Ukrainian territory, including the Eastern regions with the Russian separatists that Putin embedded there decades ago. Once Russian forces are all back in their own country, then negotiations can start on which sanctions will be removed and when. Some sanctions may need to be active for decades as a means of keeping Putin from invading again.

I hope the West has learned its lesson and will continue to refuse to do business with Russia so long as Putin is in power. He is a malevolent force against peace throughout the world.

no relief on the sanctions, only escalations.

Or do what russia and putin do (and repugs), agree to do it and then make up a stupid excuse and not do it.
