Ukraine invasion: American Express suspends operations in Russia and Belarus

American Express has announced it is suspending "all operations" in Russia and Belarus.

The payments company said it had taken the decision in the "light of Russia's ongoing, unjustified attack on the people of Ukraine".

Amex said "globally issued" cards will no longer work at shops or ATMs in Russia.

Cards issued "locally in Russia by Russian banks" will stop working outside the country.

1. don't but Visa MC statement though - ban does not apply to any cards issued and used in Russia

Visa and MC are perfectly ok to support their transactions in Russia. Very few people will be impacted by this and it would be received as a joke by people in Russia. These companies are doing it for publicity only, they want to continue working in Russia. Ukrainian children are being bombed and Russians can continue using their credit cards.
