Schiff: Justice Department 'ought to be investigating' Trump's actions after the 2020 election

Source: Politico

Days after the House committee to investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol said there was evidence that Donald Trump committed crimes in trying to overturn the presidential election that he lost, Rep. Adam Schiff urged action from the Justice Department.

Speaking on CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday morning, Schiff said: “We believe there's a good-faith basis to conclude that the former president and his campaign may have violated any number of federal laws,” adding: “I do think the Justice Department ought to be looking at these issues and ought to be investigating.”

The California Democrat is a member of the Jan. 6 committee, which on Wednesday released and filed its findings in federal court. The committee’s body of evidence included testimony and documents that it said shows that Trump misled the public and pushed advisers to try to overturn the election.

On Sunday, Schiff referenced a “graphic example” in which the former president spoke on the phone with Georgia’s secretary of state after the election, urging him to find the exact number of ballots Trump needed to take the victory from Joe Biden. The Republican state official, Brad Raffensperger, resisted Trump’s efforts, and later said he felt the then-president’s words were a threat to him.

should call Schiff and tell him that we don't know what DOJ may be investigating? It could take years before we find out that DOJ did nothing.

the 1/6 committee is marginalized...I sense Garland is letting the committee pick off the "wagons" circling Trump...Meadows, Navarro, Stone, Clark, Eastman, Giuliani, Flynn et al. ... and when all that is tucked away, Garland will go after Trump..I find it somewhat reassuring the DOJ is shrouded in secrecy, unlike the Mueller investigation that leaked like a sieve...I think Adam Schiff is terrific and I understand his frustration but like the rest of us, he'll have to wait...

I mean, if he truly believes Garland has been derelict, and Biden won’t fire him, then that’s the only option.

Adam Schiff is no more going to go after Garland than I am...he's voicing his frustration, our frustration...I say Schiff and the rest of the 1/6 committee focus stripping away Trump's "protective shield" of malignant conspirators, and let Garland destroy Trump

Declining share of Americans see Trump as primarily responsible for Jan. 6
BY REBECCA BEITSCH - 02/08/22

https://thehill.com/policy/national-security/593349-declining-share-of-americans-see-trump-as-bearing-a-lot-of

snip...

The number of Republicans who say Trump bears no responsibility at all for the attack grew from 46 percent to 57 percent over the last year, while the share of Democrats who see Trump as having "a lot" of responsibility for the attack dropped from 81 percent to 70 percent.

The survey also found the public largely divided over how much attention should be paid to the Jan. 6 attack and its impacts, with roughly a third of those surveyed responding that too much, too little and the right amount of attention has been given to reviewing the day.

The poll was conducted between Jan. 10 and Jan. 17 among 5,128 U.S. adults. It has a margin of error of 2 percentage points.

This trend will continue as long as it looks like our side is doing nothing. I hope the hearings start soon enough before the elections, & are dramatic enough to generate the enthusiasm that we are losing daily.

I think our side is pretty demoralized right now. Sometimes when people tune out they don't tune back in. Also, new voters are fickle. And this isn't like 2018 when we had Trump the villain pulling us together. I think their side is pretty fired up. GOTV has been our strong suit, but now they have all those voter suppression laws. I'm not very optimistic on a good day. I don't see how we hold both chambers.

I think as the election gets closer, there will be indictments and other scandals and also the fact that Biden has battled (and hopefully beaten) Putin. I know the Repughs will complain no matter what happens, but we're on the right track, I think.

No pun intended.

And what's worse, Big Oil probably sees no reason to show restraint at the pump - since $5-a-gallon gas would both fatten their offshore accounts AND get more Repugs elected in Congress.

A win-win, from their point of view.

To "avoid interference". In reality, such a move only emboldens the election interferers.
