Supreme Court denies GOP requests to block new congressional maps in N.C., Pa.
Source: Washington Post
The Supreme Court on Monday refused separate requests from Republicans in North Carolina and Pennsylvania to block new congressional maps approved by courts in those states, meaning the fall elections will be held in districts more favorable to Democrats than the ones created by the GOP-led legislatures.
North Carolinas Republican leaders had asked the high court to embrace an unprecedented theory that the states judiciary could not impose a new map for congressional elections, even though it found the legislatures version had violated the states guarantee of free and fair elections. The U.S. Constitution, they argued, leaves that question in the hands of the legislature, not courts.
Three of the courts conservatives said they were anxious to consider such an argument. But a fourth who also expressed interest said it was too close to the election to upend planning for primaries.
In the Pennsylvania case, the court turned down a request to intervene in the state supreme courts decision to impose a map after the Democratic governor vetoed a map passed by the legislature, which is controlled by Republicans. The challenge was brought by Republican voters and candidates.

Edit to add - seems like the same argument they had back in 2018 when the PA State Supreme Court drew what became our current map and put the previously gerrymandered mess to rest for once and for all, where the SCOTUS refused to rule in that case too.
The newly redrawn map done by this same Court (after the GOP's version was torpedoed by Wolf and Wolf's wasn't accepted by the Court), is basically using the same one that was drawn in 2018 but removes a seat (PA went from 18 Districts to 17), but they pretty kept the same layout except for expanding parts of the west's districts and working around the edges of the districts here in the east to get the populations evened out.
