Biden announces ban on Russian energy imports

Source: CNN

(CNN) President Joe Biden on Tuesday announced his administration is banning Russian oil, natural gas and coal imports to the US in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

"Today I am announcing the United States is targeting the main artery of Russia's economy. We're banning all imports of Russian oil and gas and energy," Biden said in remarks from the White House. "That means Russian oil will no longer be acceptable at US ports and the American people will deal another powerful blow to Putin's war machine."

The US will make the move unilaterally, without its European allies, due to disagreement among European nations about whether to ban Russian energy imports. EU countries have significantly more exposure to Russian energy than the US.US officials decided, given the extreme political pressure at home, they could move without the coalition and not create major issues.Bloomberg was first to report the move.

US imports from Russia make up a small slice of American energy portfolio -- roughly 8% in 2021, of which only about 3% was crude oil. White House economic officials have been engaged for more than a week as to how to manage any decision to cut off those imports, officials say. The Department of Energy reported that in the last two weeks of February, Russian oil imports dropped to zero as US companies cut ties with Russia, effectively implementing their own ban.

Can you imagine where we'd be, dealing with the Ukraine crisis, if Putin-puppet Trump and former Exxon exec Rex Tillerson were still in office? (Although I have to give grudging credit Tillerson for pointing out that Trump is a fucking moron.) There would be no ban on Russian energy imports in support of Ukraine, and Donald and Rex would have seized the opportunity to cash in on higher oil prices.

EU is the main purchaser of Russian energy products.

to the war!!! Besides, prices have been rising pretty severely every summer anyway, war or no war. Wish someone would do an analysis comparing normal spring- summer rise to this current price rise. I would, but Im already late for work. LOLOL

the "summer blend" of oil is more expensive (due to the types of additives including to reduce vaporization due to the temps) and thus the cost goes up. The "winter blend" is cheaper because those additives are not needed.

Here's a quicky explanation - https://www.gasbuddy.com/go/summer-blend-and-winter-blend-gasoline

That will explode q heads everywhere. An american president wearing the national colors of a foreign power! How terrible! Much worse than a tan suit on a black potus!

That is sarcasm for the alert inclined.

But I can already hear the faux-rage.

during the day when most people are out or working or in school and so on and don't hear it or hear about what was said second-hand with all the associated biases.

Biden made several excellent points about US gas and oil production setting records, about the amount of federal land drilling permits, 9k, that are unused and the need for the US to develop alternate energy sources. Sadly, few heard it.

Plenty of Americans are paying attention to what is happening in Ukraine. They are seeing gas and energy prices rise rapidly. If Biden would only make these announcements in primetime on the broadcast networks. He's only taking about 10-15 minutes tops and many more Americans would hear the truth.

It's not like regular programming isn't regularly pushed back by sporting events.
