Hawaii will drop its mask mandate, the last state to do so.
Source: New York Times
Hawaii on Tuesday became the 50th and final state to announce that it will drop its universal indoor mask mandate, as the United States attempts to move on from the once ferocious Omicron wave. Gov. David Ige, a Democrat, said at a news briefing on Tuesday afternoon that the mandate would no longer be in effect starting on March 26.
We have reduced Covid-19 in a way to the point where most of us will be safe without masks indoors, he said.Like the rest of the country, Omicron cases surged in Hawaii from December to mid-January before plummeting fast. As the surge receded, many authorities on the mainland rushed to end mask mandates, leaving Hawaii and Puerto Rico some of the last holdouts. Puerto Rico announced Monday that its mask mandate would be lifted for most places starting on Thursday.
Masks are still required indoors at schools in Hawaii, even though the states education department on Tuesday lifted the outdoor mask mandate on school campuses. But the end of the blanket mandate marked an abrupt reversal from a week ago, when Mr. Ige said that the states indoor mask mandate would remain in place even though he was lifting other restrictions.
He had said that, on March 25, he would end the states strict entry requirements for travelers and the mandate that state and county employers provide their vaccination status or show negative test results at work. However, even though the indoor mask mandate is lifting, the state authorities still recommend that people wear masks if they are in a crowded setting or around immunocompromised people. Masks are also recommended at health care facilities, schools and prisons.

(128,768 posts)but I know they are trying to take away GOP "talking points" and "rallying points" (and for the most part, it did essentially neutralize the trucker clowns this past week and they struggled mightily to come up with some other reason to whine about... and failed).
This is so that we don't end up with a 2010 teabagger redux. All you can do is just hang on to those masks (I know I have mine here 6.500 miles from you in PA).

(13,582 posts)100% mask compliance until Thursday when a big convention rolled into the hotel - then all bets were off. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted

(128,768 posts)Had a great time. It was a long flight from here in Philly (11 or so hours with a stopover in Dallas using American Airlines).
Nowadays I just grow a tropical hibiscus, a couple plumerias, and a stephanotis (all overwintering in my basement at the moment).

(21,111 posts)But visit San Francisco or Los Angeles for a couple of days and then go to Hawaii. It makes the flight more tolerable. My hubby works for a major airline carrier and we fly standby. Once we had to fly to Chicago and then back to San Francisco to get home standby, It was a long day and night!

(128,768 posts)Did the gamut of tours in both places.
IIRC, the flight time from either to Honolulu is about 5 hours. One of my bucket list trips was to do the loop around the U.S. by Amtrak (booking a sleeper cabin). The pandemic ditched that trip for the time being, but I am still researching it and the various routes that I could try for some time in the future...

(21,111 posts)But our train system sucks. Id love for our train system here to be upgraded but the republicans dont believe in improving in upgrading America. After taking trains in Europe. Our system is a joke sadly.

(128,768 posts)but I know there are some standard "routes" that have been in use for years.
I was looking at doing something like this -
This is the first time I checked their site in a couple years and it looks like they have some new and pretty decent "pre-packaged" trips now (which were more limited the last time I looked) - https://www.amtrakvacations.com/vacation-types/cross-country-train-trips
I've actually been to D.C., Chicago, and Seattle (as well as L.A.) but haven't been to New Orleans and wanted to be able to hit some of the states I haven't been to along the way. See now I am going to have to go deep diving through their site again.

(45,411 posts)Hawaii fared better than lots of similar population states during this pandemic. They seem to know what they're doing.
