Vladimir Putin reportedly fires eight generals
Source: EuroWeekly
Russian President Vladimir Putin has fired eight of his generals since the start of his special operation, according to Oleksiy Danilov, the head of Ukraines security council. Putin is rumoured to be livid over the slow advance on Kyiv by his military forces, coupled with the estimated high losses, which has led to him wielding the axe on his commanders.
The FSB security service has also apparently felt Putins anger too, with claims that the Russian leader is fuming over reports handed to him prior to the invasion which informed him that Ukraine was weak, and would roll over once attacked. Several of his high-ranking commanders have also been killed in action.
Speaking to The Times, a former senior British intelligence officer, Philip Ingram, said, He blames them for seeding him the advice that led to the poor decision-making in Ukraine. Adding that Putin is obviously very upset at the poor intelligence.
...
Danilov told state television in Ukraine, They had about eight generals removed from their posts because they did not complete the task. Now new ones have been appointed. We clearly understand what is happening in the Russian Federation. I can say that they are desperate.

If a city didn't surrender to the Mongols, they would kill the entire population.
That happened in Russia and was the reason why a good portion of it were tributary states if not outright controlled by the successors to the Mongol Empire established by Gengis Khan. At least until the rise of Muscovy (which gave rise to the modern Russian state) in the late 1400's.

So, it is possible that no matter how hard they try to push, there is nothing to push with.

(15,237 posts)This was Soviet doctrine even after the war. True mobile warfare eluded the Soviets who relied on brute overwhelming force. Special political forces would motivate front line troops with machine guns in the rear move or die. Partisans separated from the main force were not to be trusted even when they were successful and were sent to Gulags after the war. Trying to recruit Syrians to fight in Ukraine is very telling.

(9,963 posts)I read an interesting opinion piece in WaPo today that identifies the FSB as Putins real fear. If they determine that hes a threat to Russias future and their power, they have the skill tondo something about him. That might not be death but simply removing him from power.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2022/03/10/putin-coup-russia-siloviki/
The real threat to Putin comes from the siloviki, a Russian word used loosely to describe Russias security and military elite. These are people like Nikolai Patrushev, currently the secretary of the Russian security council, and Alexander Bortnikov, the head of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), as well as other current and former senior security officials.
Men like Patrushev and Bortnikov not only possess hard power, but they know how to use it and are inclined to do so. The FSB includes around 160,000 members of the Border Guard service, as well as thousands of armed personnel with law enforcement authorities. But the strength of the FSB comes not only from its ability to do violence; the organization is also highly secretive. FSB officers are skilled at working clandestinely, keeping their most sensitive operations strictly compartmented to small groups. Putin understands this better than most: He once ran the organization himself.
The siloviki are willing to use this deadly mixture of hard power and secrecy when a serious threat to the Russian kleptocratic system emerges.

Ill be honest right away: I have hardly slept all these days, almost all the time at work, my head is a little floating, like in a fog. And from overwork, sometimes I already catch states, as if all this is not real.
To be honest, the Pandora's box is open - a real global horror will begin by the summer - global famine is inevitable (Russia and Ukraine were the main suppliers of grain in the world, this year's harvest will be smaller, and logistical problems will bring the catastrophe to a peak point).
I can't tell you what guided those at the top when deciding on the operation, but now they are methodically lowering all the dogs on us (the Service). We are scolded for analytics - this is very in my profile, so I will explain what is wrong.
Recently, we have been increasingly pressed to customize reports to the requirements of management - I once touched on this topic. All these political consultants, politicians and their retinue, influence teams - all this created chaos. Strong.
...
2) Our logistics are already overstretched today. We will drive a many times larger contingent, and what will we get? Ukraine is a hefty country in terms of territory. And now the level of hatred towards us is going through the roof. Our roads simply won't be able to handle such supply caravans - everything will come to a standstill. And we won't manage to pull it out - because it's chaos.
And these two reasons fall out at the same time, although even one is enough to break everything off.
Losses: I don't know how many there are. Nobody knows. For the first two days there was still control, now no one knows what is going on there. You can lose large units in communication. They can be found, or they can dissolve due to being attacked. And there, even the commanders may not know how many of them are running around somewhere nearby, how many died, how many are in captivity. The number of deaths is definitely in the thousands. Maybe 10 thousand, maybe 5, or maybe only 2. Even at the headquarters they dont know for sure. But it should be closer to 10. And now we dont count the LDNR corps - they have their own accounting.
...
We have a conditional deadline of June. Conditional - because in June we have no economy left, nothing remains. By and large, next week there will be a turning point in one of the sides, simply because the situation cannot be in such an overstrain. There are no analytics - it is impossible to calculate the chaos, here no one can say anything for sure. Act intuitively, and even on emotions - but this is not poker for you. Rates will rise, in the hope that suddenly some option will shoot through. The trouble is that we, too, can now miscalculate and lose everything in one move.
...
Is there a possibility of a local nuclear strike? Yes. Not for military purposes (it will not give anything - this is a defense breakthrough weapon), but with the aim of intimidating others. At the same time, the soil is being prepared to turn everything to Ukraine - Naryshkin and his SVR are now digging the earth to prove that they secretly created nuclear weapons there. Damn, they are now hammering on what we have long studied and dismantled:
...
From the cynical, I will only add that I do not believe that VV Putin will press the red button to destroy the whole world.
Firstly, there is more than one person making a decision, at least someone will jump off. And there are a lot of people there - there is no "one-man red button".
Much more at the link.

One of the things she talked about was when she was at a dinner and was seated next to Putin. Colbert asked what it was like and what did he talk about. She said that the conversation was sparse and interestingly, Putin did not touch his food or drink. So he doesn't even trust his own people with his food etc.

(6,506 posts)now would be the time. When did he fire these generals?
I am not saying we should do it. My heart wants to, but my head is hesitant. But, if we were to intervene militarily on behalf of Ukraine, now would be the time. After he fires his staff, and before he uses chemicals or biologicals on the population. And, before he bullies Lukashenko into joining in. This, IMO, would be the moment.
If he uses chemicals on the population, I would take him on, and I would not stop at the Russian border. I'd free the freakin Russians, too. Would be messy for awhile, but later on, the world could relax and rebuild.
Just Russia, no one else. And, NATO never, ever did want to invade Russia. Look at what Putin has done.

Now's their chance to be real patriots and save their country from a madman. Just sayin' there is a solution to this problem, and it has to come from the Russian people. Russian generals tried to depose Gorbachev and the Russian people handed them their butts. I think they'll support them if the generals decide Putin has to spend more time with his family.
