Late winter storm blasts South, Northeast with snow and wind
Source: AP
A late winter storm blasted the northeastern United States on Saturday with high winds and snow that could pile up to a foot high, sending temperatures plummeting and making travel hazardous after first taking aim at the Deep South.
The National Weather Service said 7 to 12 inches (18 to 30 centimeters) could be expected in northern areas of Pennsylvania and New York with winds gusting as high as 45 mph (72 kph). Philadelphia residents, while expecting only a few inches of snow, were warned that blizzard-like conditions were possible at one point, and later a flash freeze was possible with wet surfaces rapidly becoming icy due to plummeting temperatures.
Gale warnings were in effect in coastal New Jersey and Delaware areas, with gusts of 40 to 50 mph (65 kph to 95 kph) possible and forecasters warning of tree damage and resulting power outages as well as rough boating conditions. A wind advisory was in effect for other areas.
Meteorologist Andrew Orrison of the weather service office in College Park, Maryland, said moderate to heavy snow had fallen over a rather large area of the eastern United States, but the storm was moving quickly to the northeast.

(5,717 posts)Literally, a "front." Here in Colorado, if we have a delightfully warm winter day, we dig out the snow boots, car brush, and shovel.

(12 posts)What is April going to be like? Would there be sudden snow there then too? I will be outdoors every day all day long from the seventh of April until the first week of May. Hiking and camping along the Colorado Springs to Denver to Golden line just East of the mountains. I havent been to Colorado for over twenty-five years, and I lived there for the few years of adolescence. Lots of memories from fifty years ago. But I dont remember the weather, have already bought my bus tickets, and am wondering now how much precaution I should take!

(5,717 posts)I have seen light snow on Easter and also very warm days. If you will be outdoors, I suggest you bring some rain gear, and it is always a good idea in Colorado to dress in layers. It can be below freezing at night and warm up to 50 or 60° during the day. April is quite unpredictable. Hope you have a great trip!

(12 posts)Thank you very much for the reply. I bus into Colorado Springs and my brother picks me up to drive to Royal Gorge in the first week of April. After that everything is open. I want to hike into Denver ( Littleton) from the Monument area and explore Jefferson County where I lived so long ago and the adjoining mountains. I am amazed, for instance, that Georgetown is only thirty miles into the Rockies. When I was younger, I had thought of it as a big day trip. But what makes this trip extra interesting is an entire change of life. I usually spend a summer camping in one area like Tahoe and hiking that specific area. But now I will keep moving all month long from place to place. This is preparation in a much more familiar area for visiting family out East in the following months. The plan is to hike and bus northward from Virginia Beach to Maine between May and November. I will certainly bring rain gear! Thanks again for the advice.

(32,356 posts)We got a small storm, about 4 inches of snow last night. But it will be gone by Monday I think. We're supposed to have 70 degree weather by Wednesday. I'm ready!

(10,072 posts)It's damn cold but I love the snow. Well, the mild snows we get here.
They are nothing compared to the snows I experienced in North Chicago in the mid 1980s though. But they are prettier here in the mountains.

(46,262 posts)Is the April "last gasp of winter" storm.
Either some snow, or an ice storm, (but haven't had that in years,) or simple bad thunderstorms, including tornadoes.
