Pregnant woman, baby die after Russia bombed maternity ward

Source: AP

By MSTYSLAV CHERNOV

MARIUPOL, Ukraine (AP) — A pregnant woman and her baby have died after Russia bombed the maternity hospital where she was meant to give birth, The Associated Press has learned. Images of the woman being rushed to an ambulance on a stretcher had circled the world, epitomizing the horror of an attack on humanity’s most innocent.

In video and photos shot Wednesday by AP journalists after the attack on the hospital, the woman was seen stroking her bloodied lower abdomen as rescuers rushed her through the rubble in the besieged city of Mariupol, her blanched face mirroring her shock at what had just happened. It was among the most brutal moments so far in Russia’s now 19-day-old war on Ukraine.

The woman was rushed to another hospital, yet closer to the frontline, where doctors labored to keep her alive. Realizing she was losing her baby, medics said, she cried out to them, “Kill me now!”

Surgeon Timur Marin found the woman’s pelvis crushed and hip detached. Medics delivered the baby via cesarean section, but it showed “no signs of life,” the surgeon said.

And infuriating.

And disgusting.

And horrifying.

And tragic.

And hideous.

And then on top of every other nightmare in Ukraine, there’s no end in sight.

It’s only going to get worse. The more desperate he is, the more missiles he’ll launch. There are reports now, too, of chemical weapons used against a village in the east.

Tired of this madman running amok. I guess it will truly take one Russian “putting his toecap” into NATO territory (per the British) before anything can be done.

I can’t help but wonder, if Ukraine and Zelensky manage to survive, how this will color their view of the West.

(P.S. I know all the arguments chapter and verse for not intervening, so no lectures, folks. Thanks.)

The Iraq War made me so angry, I’m not sure I felt the stress as much. Perhaps it was because Saddam Hussein and his sons deserved no empathy while Zelensky has brought the world along with him in this battle to defeat Putin.

And when I think about how intolerable I find the situation of standing by and watching a soulless madman murder at will, I just cannot imagine the horrors the Ukrainian people are suffering—all for a war of choice by a man who has deluded himself into believing he is meant to rebuild Imperial Russia. We all know the arguments against war with Russia, but something must happen soon to stop this madness. Not sure what that is, but this destruction cannot be allowed to continue when we have the ability to stop it.

“ Not sure what that is, but this destruction cannot be allowed to continue when we have the ability to stop it.”

The sooner we can stop it, the lower the carnage, destruction, and death toll.

It’s a diabolical example of giving an inch and taking a mile. The man literally has the West — and the world — by the shorthairs. God knows I don’t want to see nukes. But I do believe this is de facto WWIII. Surely some kind of action can be taken. Putin’s going to Putin no matter what. Time to stop the slaughter of innocents.

I am so sorry Ukraine is not a member of NATO. This should serve as a huge wake up call to those countries that are still not.

Donald Trump has said that Vladimir Putin is “very savvy” and made a “genius” move by declaring two regions of eastern Ukraine as independent states and moving Russian armed forces to them.

Trump said he saw the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis on TV “and I said: ‘This is genius.’ Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine … Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that’s wonderful.”

The former US president said that the Russian president had made a “smart move” by sending “the strongest peace force I’ve ever seen” to the area.

He said pretty much the same at a rally last weekend, along with the claim that he was the only one who could “handle” Putin. How? By kissing his ass and blackmailing Ukraine?

GTFO, bootlicker.

FYI This horror in the Ukraine would not be happening now if the republicans had not
stepped aside and let Russia install Trump as President or not voting to convict him in
2019 for trying to blackmail Zelenskyy/Ukraine into making up dirt on Joe and Hunter
Biden (Russian pushed meme).

Madison Cawthorn’s comments, for one, have been just as bad.

I don’t think this is off-topic…but I am becoming very afraid of the 2024 election here. November could well be the canary in the coalmine. Do hope I’m badly mistaken.

He's angered millions around the world, he's angered his own people (the sanctions brought on by his actions will make their lives miserable), he's angered the rich & powerful oligarchs who surround him & hold half his wealth (they have lost their comfortable lifestyles, lost most of their wealth, lost their yachts, lost their ability to buy expensive cars, travel etc), & now he's angering his military & intelligence services (there are reports he's so mad about how badly things are going in Ukraine he's fired several generals & members of the GRU & FSB intelligence services).

Before too long the situation could reach the point where the people around him will be so angry at him they'll revolt & remove him from power. Hopefully if/when that happens the people of Russia will be so angry at him that they could eagerly embrace an "anti-Putin" leader, one who promises to never behave like Putin did, never make their lives miserable like Putin did, & lead Russia back into the modern world, making their lives better than they've ever been before. That's how a post-Putin leader is going to gain popular support.

As for Putin personally, I would not be disappointed if he met a "Muammar Gaddafi ending." It would be fitting.
