UN secretary-general: Nuclear war is 'back within the realm of possibility'

Source: Business Insider

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said nuclear war is "back within the realm of possibility" as Russia gave new orders to its nuclear forces as the war on Ukraine drags on.

"Raising the alert of Russian nuclear forces is a bone-chilling development," Guterres said while addressing media on Monday in New York. "The prospect of nuclear conflict, once unthinkable, is now back within the realm of possibility."

He added: "It's time to stop the horror unleashed on the people of Ukraine, and get on the path of diplomacy and peace."

A few days after Russian forces invaded Ukraine in late February, President Vladimir Putin ordered his country's nuclear deterrent forces on high alert. Putin blamed his move on NATO and economic sanctions imposed by Western countries.

His invasion is a no win situation. He loss.

Or, thermonuclear incineration for all.

This is a fantastic learning opportunity for the world's superpowers “bullies” which will be roundly ignored.

or narcissistic world domination 'revelation' of the dictator Putin. We are toast. One 'tactical battlefield nuke' used and the danger of escalation is exponential. I just hope reason and sanity prevail. Even China has to understand the growing danger we might all be in concerning the whims of an evil 21st century Genghis Khan dictator along the lines of Hitler.

And trump helped this mofo. Backed him to the hilt. TPOSFG must be in his bunker laughing and 'partying' at the prospects of his master, Putin 'taking over the world'. TPOSFG probably thinks Putin will give him what's left of America to destroy further...

then we'll be dancing on that string forever, and any two-bit dictator or terror organization can force us to do whatever they want.

I know it is scary, and there is no really good option, but caving in seems like the worst of the worst in available courses we can take.

Mutually assured destruction sounds pretty stupid. Or is Putin deluded enough to think he can use nuclear weapons with no retaliation.

The Russians believe that they can use tactical nuclear weapons without the risk of a strategic retaliation by the West.

Russia has adopted an "escalate to de-escalate" strategy in their nuclear doctrine. Essentially, they will use threats of a nuclear strike or an actual limited nuclear strike during a conventional war in order to force the opposition to surrender or make concessions. This was further reported within our 2018 Nuclear Posture Review. [link:https://media.defense.gov/2018/Feb/02/2001872886/-1/-1/1/2018-NUCLEAR-POSTURE-REVIEW-FINAL-REPORT.PDF|]

From page 7 of the NPR 2018

While nuclear weapons play a deterrent role in both Russian and
Chinese strategy, Russia may also rely on threats of limited nuclear first use, or actual first
use, to coerce us, our allies, and partners into terminating a conflict on terms favorable to
Russia. Moscow apparently believes that the United States is unwilling to respond to
Russian employment of tactical nuclear weapons with strategic nuclear weapons.

From page 30 of the NPR 2018.
Moscow threatens and exercises limited nuclear first use,
suggesting a mistaken expectation that coercive nuclear threats or limited first use could
paralyze the United States and NATO and thereby end a conflict on terms favorable to
Russia.

Russia believes that its threats or the use of tactical nuclear weapon can put it in an advantageous position in a conventional military conflict. They do not regard tactical nuclear weapons the same way as strategic ones. Now, this could be a massive miscalculation by the Russian military, but this is their mindset, based on the most recent publicly available assessments.

and failed but not for lack of trying.

I think it will happen, in a limited form. But it won't seem limited where it strikes. To state the obvious.
