'People's Convoy' drives through D.C. after permit for organized demonstration downtown partially denied
The detour from the Beltway brought the full convoy into the District for the first time since it began Feb. 23

Traffic is backed up Monday afternoon on the 14 Street Bridge between Arlington and Washington. (Virginia Department of Transportation traffic camera)
Police blocked interstate exits in Washington into downtown as hundreds of trucks, cars and SUVs protesting the government's response to the pandemic rode into the city to start a second week of demonstrations.
D.C. police said exits were being blocked as the "People's Convoy" encountered severe traffic when it approached the District. The convoy entered the city via the 14th Street Bridge on Interstate 395, then continued to Interstate 695 before crossing the Anacostia River. The convoy was then expected to return to the Beltway before going back to Hagerstown.
"I believe we're making a good statement today," said one trucker who live-streams under the name ZOT. "We're right in the swamp now and creating a horrible mess down here."

Police asked for patience, saying authorities were trying to prevent the convoy from exiting the highway. ... "These rolling road closures are occurring in real-time as they are needed, and will be lifted as soon as they are no longer necessary," said an alert from D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Overheard on the CB radio during their Beltway loops this morning: "We're going to f*ck some sh*t up. If you [the government] don't do what we say, it's gonna happen."
What does "If you [the government] don't do what we say" mean? What are they saying the government needs to do? I haven't heard word one about that, just stories about idiots wasting gas driving around the DC area. I was under the impession that they hadn't articulated any actual demands. But maybe I missed something?
Either way, I think they're jerks. Big whiny baby jerks.

(56,897 posts)JUST IN: Convoy honking horns, jamming up NB I-395 near Pentagon City
ARLnow.com Today at 2:15pm
(Updated at 3:10 p.m.) After a week of ineffectual laps around the Beltway, the Peoples Convoy is now jamming up part of I-395 in Arlington.
The convoy, which features a mix of big rigs and personal vehicles, is intended to protest the Covid-related government mandates. It received considerable media attention last week but didnt do much to disrupt traffic.
Today, however, it is heading into D.C. by way of Arlington and I-395, and creating traffic headaches and a lot of noise in the process.
Traffic cameras show flag-adorned protest vehicles moving at a snails pace in the main northbound lanes of I-395, approaching the 14th Street Bridge. Virginia State Police vehicles can also be seen, monitoring the demonstration. The northbound I-395 HOV lanes over the Potomac remain open and seem to be flowing freely. ... Public safety watchdog Dave Statter, from his perch in Pentagon City, reports a non-stop honking of horns from the convoy.
{snip}
Delays as a result of the convoy remain on NB I-395 approaching the 14th Street Bridge. It gets especially slow around the Pentagon. https://arlnow.com/2022/03/14/just-in-convoy-honking-horns-jamming-up-nb-i-395-near-pentagon-city/

I'm going to enjoy the extra daylight and go for a walk in a few minutes. We stopped getting the Post a while back as well...we ended up just taking it direct from the bag and putting it in the recycling. Anything I want to read, I can read online.

(127,312 posts)I would always tell my bosses that I HAD to leave no later than 2 pm or I would be SOL trapped. I usually would aim to say my goodbyes and start hitting the road at around 1:30 pm (355 N to 495 E to 95 N) . That way my arrival back to Philly would be sortof near the beginning of our rush hour around 4 pmish and not too bad (although it seems to start building around 3:30 pm, but is solid stopped or tapping brakes by 5 pm).
I think some of those people "going in" are taking a shortcut to avoid the beltway.

(5,783 posts)I had to go on travel to northern New Jersey, near Morristown, about two weeks before Christmas. I left the office about 2:00 (in Crystal City) thinking it would be a typical 4-5 hour drive. I hadn't cleared Baltimore after 4 hours. Couldn't turn around, couldn't get off the road, couldn't move. It was awful. Finally got to the hotel just after midnight. I haven't been back since.

I was glad when I finally went on and got an EZPass and could at least get into those lanes to speed up the toll part going either way. I have even opted to "pay more" to get in those special "express" toll lanes to speed it up some.

After more than a week of circling D.C., the Trucker Convoy has finally decided to enter the District. Traffic jams can be seen on Northbound 395.

Colleen Grablick | https://twitter.com/colleengrablick

WAMU/DCist / Tyrone Turner
The convoy of truckers thats been hanging out in Maryland and riding around area highways for over a week drove into D.C. proper on Monday, causing heavy traffic and closed roadways.
I-395, I-695, and I-295 were impacted by several closures as of mid-afternoon Monday, according to a spokesperson for D.C. police. ... We do not have a list as these rolling road closures are occurring in real-time as they are needed, and will be lifted as soon as they are no longer necessary, the spokesperson wrote in an email to DCist/WAMU.
According to the Washington Post, the convoy entered D.C. through the 14th Street Bridge on I-395, and continued onto I-695. Their plan is to return to Hagerstown, where theyve been congregating at the Speedway track to coordinate their daily rides.
{snip}
A convoy leader, Brian Brase, told the Washington Post that the group decided to enter D.C. on Monday to claim a bigger presence. They had submitted an application to stage a two-week long protest, beginning Monday, on the National Mall, but the National Park Service denied the groups request. ... Its unclear when the group plans to disperse, or if it has plans to enter the city for another time. Brase told the Post theyre taking it day-by-day.
This story has been updated to correct that the group is gathering at the Hagerstown Speedway track.
