Ukraine sees room for compromise, as 20,000 escape Mariupol

Source: AP

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine said it saw possible room for compromise in talks with Russia despite Moscow’s stepped up bombardment Tuesday of Kyiv and new assaults on the port city of Mariupol, from where an estimated 20,000 civilians managed to flee through a humanitarian corridor. The fast-moving developments on the diplomatic front and on the ground came as Russia’s invasion neared the three-week mark and the number of Ukrainians who have left the country amid Europe’s heaviest fighting since World War II eclipsed 3 million.

After delegations from Ukraine and Russia met again Tuesday via video, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said early Wednesday that Russia’s demands were becoming “more realistic.” The two sides were expected to speak again Wednesday. Zelenskyy, who was expected to address the U.S. Congress on Wednesday, thanked President Joe Biden and “all the friends of Ukraine” for $13.6 billion in new support.

He appealed for more weapons and more sanctions to punish Russia, and repeated his call to “close the skies over Ukraine to Russian missiles and planes.” He said Russian forces on Tuesday had been unable to move deeper into Ukrainian territory but had continued their heavy shelling of cities. Over the past day, 28,893 civilians were able to flee the fighting through nine humanitarian corridors, although the Russians refused to allow aid into Mariupol, he said.

I'm not seeing what compromise there would be? It would only give putin more time to build up his army, have the sanctions removed, and try again.

As long as he has power, Putin is a malevolent force against democracy. My fear is that once there is any peace agreement, the greedy billionaires in the West will go back to business as usual with Russia, keeping Putin in power as he plans his next war.

Is this not joining NATO? Which Zelenskyy had already slowed way BEFORE this entire nightmare to try and deescalate Russian aggressions? Then the desperate plea to NATO, during a wartime which cannot happen, and knowing the lengthy process.

There's 7 layers of chess taking place here. Don't blink anyone lest we miss something.

Watching SkyNews on MSNBC they are saying that Ukraine said NATO is no longer an issue and they won't join NATO. Isn't that what Putin wanted in the first place? I know the NATO thing isn't going to happen as Ukraine had hoped but now that he has acknowledged that why isn't Putin satisfied? Or was Putin saying he wanted no NATO for Ukraine BEFORE but NOW he wants more than that? Will he ever be satisfied? Will he ever compromise? I think I know the answers to the last 2 questions...No and No.

is to take all of Ukraine and nothing less will do? That means no compromise will ever suit him. If that is the case then our approach should be based on that.

There is only one way this can end without a world war: Putin will have to walk away from this with something. Regardless of what it is, it will be called a 'compromise.' Fortunately, we have adults in charge who know this.
