Ukraine Mounts Counteroffensive to Drive Russians Back From Kyiv, Key Cities
Source: WSJ
YIV, UkraineUkraine said its military had launched a counteroffensive in its capital, Kyiv, and other key cities, as President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the U.S. Congress to provide more weapons and increase economic pressure on Russia.
The thump of distant shelling echoed through the center of Kyiv overnight, while Ukrainian forces appeared to counterattack in the outlying towns of Irpin, Bucha and Hostomel, which have been severely damaged in weeks of street fighting and artillery exchanges. The city and the surrounding region were under an all-day curfew Wednesday.

Ukrainian forces also said they pressed an offensive south and east of the southern port of Mykolayiv, moving in the direction of Kherson, the only Ukrainian regional capital occupied by Russia since the war began Feb. 24. Ukraine said it carried out an airstrike on the Kherson airport, which is now a Russian air base, and satellite imagery of the tarmac showed seven destroyed or damaged Russian helicopters, some of them engulfed in flames. Kyiv also said it shot down two Russian Su-30SM jets over the Black Sea off Odessa.
Moscow has largely not commented on combat losses and said its campaign was progressing.

(3,493 posts)to see if this will turn into a route. While all the pundits have carried on about Russian superiority, I see an army that is in dire straights from a supply and morale standpoint. It might not take much to roll the Putin's forces back into Russia.
And yea, I could be wrong. But war is unpredictable and should never be taken lightly. No winning, only degrees of loss.

(10,952 posts)and supplied the Russian military is. I really think that if Russian didn't have nukes, NATO could wipe the floor with them. Ukraine may have a smaller military but the are making the most with what they have and are playing multi-dimensional chess with Putin. Given enough time, Russian will totally run out of steam. Unfortunately, if they can get their bombs and missiles into position, the can leave a lot of rubble in Ukraine.

(51,129 posts)At an auto repair shop in Kyiv, mechanics used to working on car engines are instead applying their skills to heavy weaponry captured from Russian armoured vehicles. They are converting them into handheld weapons that can be used by Ukrainian troops.

(6,495 posts)Stop at the border. But, my heart says, if Russia were experiencing the infrastructure destruction that Ukraine is, and if they did not feel secure in the fact that Ukraine can't or won't go into Russia, the war would be a lot shorter.
Putin has to go, one way or another. I'd like to see him in the dock in either the Hague or the ICC. Maybe they can fight over who gets to try him for genocide.
"Special military action" my ass.

(36,294 posts)I believe you are thinking of corvettes, frigates, destroyers and cruisers. Classes of warships Russia does have.

(10,045 posts)not a war monger, but apparently their are 14 different types of ships that seem to be heading in that direction. This information is from Expat Ukraine site.

It's not my intent to critique you and I apologize if you took it that way. I did serve in the Navy and am a amateur military enthusiast. I was just pointing out a small error.

(4,006 posts)were waiting for NATO supplied millimeter-band radars that can track the path of incoming Russian shells and missiles. This highly effective radar tracks said shells, sends lat/long data to Uke artilley and they shoot back very accurately.
Then they must shoot-n-scoot, meaning once a few volleys are sent, pack up the towed artillery fast and move it and track mounted cannons far away as the Russkies have this capability as well.
