Putin warns Russia against pro-Western 'traitors' and 'scum'
Source: Reuters
LONDON, March 16 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday delivered a stark warning to Russian "traitors" who he said the West wanted to use as a "fifth column" to destroy the country.
The Kremlin leader assailed Russians who he said were more mentally in tune with the West than Russia, and said the Russian people would quickly be able to tell the difference between traitors and patriots.
"Of course they (the West) will try to bet on the so-called fifth column, on traitors - on those who earn their money here, but live over there. Live, not in the geographical sense, but in the sense of their thoughts, their slavish thinking," he told government ministers, three weeks into Russia's war with Ukraine.
"Any people, and especially the Russian people, will always be able to distinguish the true patriots from the scum and the traitors, and just to spit them out like a midge that accidentally flew into their mouths."

(7,402 posts)Never mind that he is the richest of the oligarchs. And never mind that he has had power for 22 years and counting. Sorry Putin but this is your system you built yourself. Soon, new drones will be taking out your artillery and then what?

(35,296 posts)And that's distressing--whether livestream or youtube, a lot of the state-run or strongly state-influenced tv channels are blocked. I might could see blocking them in English, but in Russian? I like seeing the originals of what's sliced and chopped and served in news articles whenever I can, because in the slicing and chopping a lot of stuff, sometimes important for context or just not considered important enough by the self-styled expert reporters, simply gets dropped.
Part of him is channeling propaganda speeches from the '70s. The rhetoric brings back bad memories of reading Pravda and Izvestiya. Part of it is just continued "they're all facists, he's a fascist, she's a fascist, you don't like me, you're a fascist" Ruscist talk.
Some of what jarred the media today was eerily familiar sounding, the "break up Russia" carp, the kind of stuff he's been saying for a long, long time, every few years, and which hasn't gotten all that much airplay while the press focused on mocking Bush's "see into his soul" and praising Obama's "reset" or just fixating on Trump's weird love/hate thing, praising the khuylo while shipping lethal weapons to Ukraine and suggesting strongly that Germany can Nord Stream II and built LNG terminals.
It's like there was a thread that the media always had to be following and things that didn't fit the narrative got short shrift. (Now there are a lot of bodies to be shriven, sadly.)

Found the earliest mention of the "they want to break up Russia" that I remembered, 2005/06. It's like he thinks the break-up of the Soviet Union was act 1 in a two act play, the break up of the RF is act 2. And just as it was external machinations and internal collaborators and weaklings that let the USSR dissolve, so too now.
Thing is, he's moderately convincing because he really sounds like he believes it. Things like the sanctions have the "operation" in Ukraine as an excuse, something that was long planned. Hearing Mizintsev give his recent speech about military operations and the horrors of the nazi Kievan regime was just boring, the military folk in the audience looked just bored, boredom masked any hint at disbelief or belief. It's like reading a phone book, by page 932 you don't care if the names and numbers are true or fake. You'd think they knew better and they were just there playing their roles according to the script, but I couldn't tell.
One thing that I'd like to double check because it's a fact that's claimed and not impossible, was the percentage and numbers of people evacuated from various places that wanted to be evacuated to Russia. I assume it must be some non-zero number, but can't accept that it's 99% of them.
