4 US Marines die in NATO drill when Osprey crashes in Norway

Source: AP

HELSINKI (AP) — Four U.S. Marines were killed when their Osprey aircraft crashed in a Norwegian town in the Arctic Circle during a NATO exercise unrelated to the Ukraine war, authorities said Saturday.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere tweeted that they died in the crash on Friday night. The cause was under investigation, but Norwegian police reported bad weather in the area.

The Marines, assigned to 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, II Marine Expeditionary Force, were taking part in a NATO exercise called Cold Response.

The U.S. says the identities of the Marines wouldn’t be immediately provided in keeping with U.S. Defense Department policy of notifying relatives.

[The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is an American military tilt-rotor aircraft with an accident history that has generated controversy over its perceived safety. The aircraft was developed by Bell Helicopter and Boeing Helicopters; the companies partner in its manufacture and support.

The V-22 Osprey has had 13 hull loss accidents that have resulted in a total of 42 fatalities.

During testing from 1991 to 2006 there were four crashes resulting in 30 fatalities. Since becoming operational in 2007, the V-22 has had seven crashes including two combat-zone crashes, and several other accidents and incidents that resulted in a total of 12 fatalities.]

I have edited the above for clarity. Now the total number of fatalities is 46.

US Marines identify four dead in Norway plane crash

21 March 2022

The US Marine Corps has identified its four members killed in a plane crash during Nato military exercises in Norway last week.

Captain Matthew Tomkiewicz, 27, Capt. Ross Reynolds, 27, Gunnery Sgt. James Speedy, 30, and Cpl. Jacob Moore, 24, died on Friday, the Marines said.

All four were aboard an Osprey aircraft that crashed in bad weather.

"These Marines were simply doing what they loved," their commanding general said on Facebook.

"We honour them by taking to the skies again with their memory in our hearts, with nerves of steel, and ready to answer our great Nation's call," Major General Michael Cederholm wrote.
