State media: No survivors found in crash of Chinese airliner

By DAKE KANG

KUNMING, China (AP) — No survivors have been found as the search continued Tuesday of the scattered wreckage of a China Eastern plane carrying 132 people that crashed a day earlier in a forested mountainous area in China’s worst air disaster in a decade.

“Wreckage of the plane was found at the scene, but up until now, none of those aboard the plane with whom contact was lost have been found,” state broadcaster CCTV said Tuesday morning, more than 18 hours after the crash.

The Boeing 737-800 crashed near the city of Wuzhou in the Guangxi region while flying from Kunming in the southwestern province of Yunnan to the industrial center of Guangzhou along the east coast. It ignited a fire big enough to be seen on NASA satellite images.

China Eastern Flight 5735 was traveling 455 knots (523 mph, 842 kph) at around 29,000 feet when it entered a steep and fast dive around 2:20 p.m. local time, according to data from flight-tracking website FlightRadar24.com. The plane plunged to 7,400 feet before briefly regaining about 1,200 feel in altitude, then dove again. The plane stopped transmitting data 96 seconds after starting to fall.

In this photo released by China's Xinhua News Agency, debris is seen at the site of a plane crash in Tengxian County in southern China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Tuesday, March 22, 2022. A China Eastern Boeing 737-800 with more than 100 people on board crashed in a remote mountainous area of southern China on Monday, officials said, setting off a forest fire visible from space in the country's worst air disaster in nearly a decade. The Alaska Airlines Flight 261 jack screw crash was a McDonnell Douglas MD-83.
The early 737's had the rudder issue due to a design flaw in a power control unit (PCU) causing uncommanded rudder movements but that was in the Original and Classic series, this was a 6 years old model.

Suicide. The damn thing was flying straight down into the ground in a video. No smoke or damage evident must have been a terrifying way to die.

Asking because I'm not familiar with possible plane failure states.

Discounting that, there is always operator error.

Usually mechanical failure shows a flight path that indicates the pilot is desperately trying to regain control. Not this time.
